First I read the article on the Senate Dems in US News and was sort of depressed at bit - it more or less leads one to believe that the Dems are going to just let this issue go away because they are afraid that it won't be a non-starter for the 06 elections and polling shows that many Americans see this program as one that mainly spies on terrorists (the articles gist, not mine).
Then I read a piece in the new Time - it is more uplifting and leads one to believe this story isn't done and that in the next week the Senate is going to request an investigation into these acts.
Which got me thinking - is it possible the strategy of the Dems is to sort of stand back a bit and let this story unfold a bit more? It also mentions that with several of the Senate republicans likely to join a vote for an investigation, the Dems might be planning a sort of "rope-a-dope" strategy. For example, are they possibly thinking that if they turn this into a rabidly partisan issue it might scare off these few Senate Republicans? And that if they get the other Senators to see this as a battle between executive and legislative power, then more might be accomplished.
Just some thoughts.
