So "after Whittington had gotten off his shot & went looking for his bird
Edited on Tue Feb-14-06 01:02 AM by henslee
Cheney and the other hunter went to another spot where they saw a covey of quail. Texas quail might be different from Iowa quail, but in Iowa when a shotgun goes off, every quail within earshot flutters away. The story doesn't make sense".

This is from a piece by Doug Ireland at COMMON DREAMS, posted by DUer "Prosense" on another thread. Doesn't it blow the whole official verson of the Cheney Hunting story to pieces? Here is link to whole article...http://www.commondreams.org/views06/0213-33.htm

1. On TDS they had a clip of the Armstrong woman saying....
"They got out of the car and ...."

Did this hunting party hunt from their vehicles?

I can't figure this one item out.

4. Yes they were "road hunting"... and the Common Dreams piece covers
Edited on Tue Feb-14-06 01:05 AM by henslee
it nicely (snip)....

"None of the stories have commented on the fact that they were "road hunting", or hunting from a car. That is just about the lowest kind of low-rent, dishonorable kind of hunting there is (the phrase "road hunting" is often used synonymously with "poaching"). When I was growing up in Iowa, I went pheasant or quail hunting on scores of occasions with my Dad and others. We never would have hunted from a vehicle and it was an insult to even suggest that someone might. It was considered dangerous and declasse, as it was too great an advantage for the hunter to be "fair". It most states, including Texas, it is also illegal:

"It is unlawful to hunt from or by means of motor-driven vehicles and land conveyances or aircraft of any kind except paraplegics and single or double amputees of legs may hunt from stationary motor-driven vehicles or land conveyances."

However, Texas exempts private property owners from the prohibition when they are on their own land and Cheney was with the property owner on his ranch. But it is still really tacky.

THIS STORY DOES NOT SEEM LIKE IT IS GOING TO DIE SOON.

9. That is so sickening
Tame birds flushed out so a few men could call them sportsmen as they shot the tame birds. That is so sick.
Not even a fighting chance.

5. And if one quail flies, they all fly, with

a great shudder of wings that'll scare the shit out of you when you're just walking and not thinking about quail. I've never been quail hunting (or any kind of hunting) but I've had a fair amount of experience with accidentally flushing coveys of quail, not with a shotgun but just by getting too close for their comfort.

A curious case.

6. The Rest of the Quail Were in a Cage or a Bag. They Couldn't Fly Away
It was a "canned" hunt. If a quail flew up, it's because somebody just released it.

10. Not necessarily
I don't think it was that kind of hunt, exactly. I think it's more hand raised birds that are released before hunters come in, not necessarily right in front of the shooter. It's not quite as obscene as some of the big game hunts where they herd an animal right in front of the hunters.

14. Has that been reported officially -- that it was a canned hunt?

It didn't come up on the news I watched tonight. Or else we were laughing so hard we missed it.

8. and where were the ever present secret service men
As Savage says, this story is a farce.

I assume they got drunked up, and spent a day and a half trying to piece together a credible story.

12. I'm thinking they're lying
when Mrs. Armstrong came out there and Cheney and Whittington both saw her,and being the chauvenistic pigs that they are, both claimed her for themselves and Dick just happened to be a quicker shot this time!

13. My take on why they dragged their feet on reporting the Cheney
shooting incident: he was poaching. They KNEW he was poaching. They knew if word got out, he would lose more of this base, many of whom are LAW-ABIDING HUNTERS, like my DBF.

He didn't have the necessary stamp for upland game birds. He was POACHING. Time to start calling it by its real name.
