If todays Democratic Party leaders wanted to really win

They would heavily fund candidates running as Libertarians. Instead of getting one percent of the vote, an infusion of funds and the connected media coverage would cause the Libertarian candidates to split the Republican vote in many areas, resulting in the most Democratic congress since the New Deal.

It will never happen, though. The two major parties need each other for their continued existence. And the big money needs the two parties to play us against each other, and would never approve such an expenditure.

3. Why not? Conservatives funded some Democratic primary campaigns.

On the theory that they would split the actual left-wing vote up and allow a more moderate, centrist candidate to win the 2004 Primary. Look into where the money that Al Sharpton used in 2004 came from if you have any doubts about that. And that's not a judgment one way or the other about Sharpton, nor even an agreement that the tactic worked. Just a fact that needs to be kept in mind.
