Massachusetts: 1, Wal-Mart: 0
this is just great ... Massachusetts just told Wal-Mart to stick their right-wing, anti-abortionist, Christian fundie values up their right-wing arses ... let's hear it for Massachusetts ...

source: http://www.boston.com/business/articles/2006/02/15/state_orders_wal_mart_to_sell_morning_after_pill/

Wal-Mart said yesterday it will start stocking and selling the emergency contraceptive drug Plan B at its 44 Massachusetts pharmacies and is giving serious consideration to carrying the drug at all of its stores nationwide.

The world's biggest retailer acted after the state Board of Registration in Pharmacy voted unanimously to require Wal-Mart to stock and dispense Plan B, a high dose of hormones that women can take three to five days after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy.

The only other state where Wal-Mart sells the so-called morning-after pill is Illinois, where a state law requires it. Elsewhere, Wal-Mart has refused to stock the drug for undisclosed ''business reasons." <skip>

In making its decision, the pharmacy board cited a regulation requiring all pharmacies to dispense ''commonly prescribed medications in accordance with the usual needs of the community." <skip>

Herman, who is working as a consultant to the law firm that filed the suit, said the store's refusal to sell Plan B stemmed from its ''desire to appeal to their fundamentalist, right-wing, gun-toting constituency."

1. Excellent News

I hope eventually these "activist" companies will see the light and realize that failing to stock legal prescribed medicines is not only dangerous to their bottom lines but more importantly dangerous to their customers.

On Edit:

PS thanks for the heart whoever you are.

3. Yep. Once again, Massachusetts leads the way
Someday the other 49 states will get it.

An obnoxious statement I realize, and there's a darker side to the state too.....But heck, with Kennedy, Kerry and a host of other great reps and actions like this, we Massachusettsians deserve occasional moments of state pride.

4. well, the other "48" actually ...
Illinois led the way by making Wal-Mart comply with their laws before Massachusetts did ... but your overall sentiment about being a progressive state is very valid ...

5. I meant in a larger sense, but point well taken.
Any state that produces a Dick Durbin can be an honarary sibling to Massachusetts.

6. Wa-Mart has ruined the fabric of the Midwest--unchallenged . . .
. . . but I'm glad that states like MA and VT are putting up a fight.

8. Wal-Mart is horrible
i run a film series and we showed the film about them ... you're right, no one should shop there ...

still, that's a separate issue ... the bottom line is that no business should be able to evade the law to cater to their right-wing base ...
