ALBANY - Gubernatorial hopeful John Faso got the personal backing of Conservative Party boss Mike Long yesterday, but still faces an uphill struggle to get the nod of his own fellow Republicans.
Long's endorsement raised the specter of a rare split between the Conservatives and the GOP, normally allies in a state where Democrats hold a hefty voter enrollment advantage.
In a letter to the state's Conservative leaders, Long wrote: "I urge you to join me in supporting John's campaign to reform Albany and lead New York in the right direction."

Asked about the endorsement, state GOP Chairman Steve Minarik, who supports Bill Weld for governor, said the Republican and Conservative parties will face "lots of risks" if they don't lock in on the same candidate this year.

If the Republican and Conservative tickets are different in November, the GOP might as well throw in the towel and save their campaign funds.
