5. This past Tues. I infiltrated Steve Chabot's "townhall" in an African
American neighborhood and passed out the following literature that I had compiled:

Republican Voter Suppression Tactics and Techniques

The GOP's Shameful Vote Strategy
Time was when Republicans were at least embarrassed by their efforts to keep African Americans from the polls. Today's Republicans have elevated vote suppression from a dirty secret to a public norm.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A707-2004Oct26.html

The New Poll Tax
Republican-sponsored ballot-security measures are being used to keep minorities from voting
One of the recurring scandals in American politics since passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 is the discriminatory use of so-called "ballot security" programs. These programs are invariably presented as good government measures necessary to prevent voter fraud, but far too often they are actually designed to suppress minority voting -- and for nakedly partisan purposes.

Now They're Registered, Now They're Not
Election Officials Express Dismay at Extent of Misinformation, Variety of Tricks Targeting Voters
Students find their party changed, while residents of several cities report bogus phone calls telling voters their polling location has been changed.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A12514-2004Oct30.html

Democrats call on Blackwell to resign
By limiting where people can cast a ballot on Election Day and confusing county boards of election about the thickness of voter registration forms, Blackwell is creating barriers to eligible voters. Senate Democrats called for the resignation of Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, accusing him of trying to suppress the vote in Ohio.
http://www.lancastereaglegazette.com/news/stories/20041001/localnews/1338143.html

Voters report fake calls
Instructions to change polling place don’t come from board of elections
Franklin County, Ohio residents report suspicious phone calls detailing false precinct changes and absentee ballot requests.

NAACP, election officials caution voters of bogus letter
South Carolina officials warn of bogus letter on NAACP letterhead says voters must have a credit check, provide two forms of photo identification, a Social Security card, a voter registration card as well as a handwriting sample.

Franklin County Elections Board Targeted Heavily Democratic Precincts
Analysis shows that the distribution of voting machines to precincts was not random but rather was severely discriminating against Democratic precincts, with nearly one out of three Democratic precincts had less voting machines in 2004 than in 2000

Pushing to Be Counted in Fla. Groups Say That Blacks May Not Be Heard at Polls
Black leaders said the scene at the supervisor's office last week was reminiscent of a blocked schoolhouse door at the height of desegregation. They charge that GOP officials are deliberately using the law to keep black people off the rolls and hinder them from voting.

TV Reveals New Florida Vote Scandal
Republican "Caging List"
GOP denies "caging list" is a plan to disrupt voting in the state's African-American voting districts.

Something rotten in the state of Florida
Pregnant chads, vanishing voters... the election fiasco of 2000 made the Sunshine State a laughing stock. More importantly, it put George Bush in the White House. You'd think they'd want to get it right this time. But no, as Andrew Gumbel discovers, the democratic process is more flawed than ever.
http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/story.jsp?story=566688

Grand jury to reconvene in phone-jamming case
A federal prosecutor said he will reconvene a grand jury in a case involving the jamming of Democratic phone lines in 2002, raising the question of whether more Republicans could be accused.
http://news.mainetoday.com/apwire/D8C6VEF80-236.shtml

Florida scraps flawed felon voting list
The purge of felons from voter rolls has been a thorny issue since the 2000 presidential election. A private company hired to identify ineligible voters before the election produced a list with scores of errors, and elections supervisors used it to remove voters without verifying its accuracy.
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2004-07-10-felons-vote-fla_x.htm?POE=click-refer

Peeling back the mandate
Voting rights are once more at the forefront of the civil rights movement
The civil rights movement is regrouping, just as racism is regrouping, and voting rights are still at the forefront. Peel back George Bush’s grinning “mandate” from November and what you find is a shadow world of widespread anti-democratic maneuvering, harassment and deceit, blatantly targeting African-American and other primarily Democratic voting blocs.
http://www.commonwonders.com/archives/col285.htm

Jim Crow returns to the voting booth
Does America have apartheid vote counting system?
The challenge to the vote count is over, but the matter of how the United States counts votes, or fails to count them, remains. The ballots left uncounted, and that will never be counted, are so-called spoiled or rejected ballots -- votes cast by citizens, but never tallied are overwhelmingly from African American precincts. This is the dark little secret of U.S. democracy.

election of the black dem candidate Mallory over white but dem Pepper has shown him how high turnout in black neighborhoods in his district could be a problem. I plan on smearing Chabot and Blackwell at the same time.

6. I watched cable news talk shows and bitched about it on a message board
Actually I didn't do that. But it seems like that's the bulk of what people consider "action" so why not.

I did some letter stuffing for a state environmental group.
Dropped off some food at a local food bank and some clothes at a clothing drop.
I paid some bills including writing some checks to some local candidates.

Not all things related to getting dems elected, but all things that made me feel good to start the day. And it's not even 7:30AM yet. I'm an early riser.

13. Wow. This reminds me of a Peanuts cartoon years ago.
Charlie Brown and his friends are looking at clouds. Charlie says, "What do you see in the clouds?" Schroeder opines that he sees the great Beethoven composing historical sonatas. Linus sees warriors about to start new civilizations. And on and on. Finally Charlie, embarrassed, thinks to himself..."I was going to say that I see duckies and piggies and horsies."

After reading all of these noble and ambitious posts, my offering would be more like duckies and piggies and horsies. So I will try harder today.

20. Left Leaflets in Grocery Store and Bookstore
Love leaving leaflets gathered from http://www.justicefornone.com/handbills/ all over the place. Leave them on the tables in my local B&N Sta***ks, local grocery stores, and any other target of opportunity.

Also enter Wal-Marts, makes me feel dirty, and ask the greeter if they were forced to work off the clock. Ask clerks for items made in USA or places other than China. Employees are sympathetic to the cause, but are afraid to respond.

Call local right wing radio talk shows and attempt to get in a few points, usually cut off mid sentence. It is hell being behind enemy lines surrounded by right wing nuts who don't seem to have an original thought.

Had a heated argument over abortion with a coworker and his wife, and laid out some arguments, but just hit him with some other affronts to his 'god' and he got really pissed:

1. Are vascectomies (spelling) an affront to god? After all you are altering his temple and interferring with the natural process of conception?

This person is on heart medication and I went for it...

2. Shouldn't you stop taking your medication? After all, god intends for you to have a defective heart, and interferring with his will is a sin, isn't it? After all, if god wants you to die from this heart problem, who are you to stop it?

His wife had plastic surgery...just could not resist this one...

3. You have allowed your wife to commit two sins, one of vanity and one of defiling gods temple by allowing your wife to have plastic surgery. Jane, his wife, chimed in and said he did not 'allow' me, and I replied, be silent women, in the coming america you will not be able to speak, vote, or do anyting but spit out babies. This was the end of the conversation.

I felt great, I wonder if his wife will not put pressure on him to open his mind. Will find out monday at work...

Today, more leaflets.....

None of it may help bring about change, but at least I feel better....

John Lenon had it right.....

It's a great grassroots organization that is pulling volunteers and money from blue Cali to work together with organizers in red counties. There's a fundraiser in Berkeley (attending a play) next Sunday. If anyone's interested in going, send me a PM and I'll forward the info. I don't think I can go since I'm precinct walking. Also, head out to Pombo's district. Many outsiders are helping to oust Pombo. After the primaries, that's where I'll be working.

We will be providing walk sheets, registration forms and info on where to go and who to talk to, for all the local groups. Plus voter registration records.....

On this last Tuesday, I called all the folks on the California Senate Rules Committee. Our Sec'y of State, Bruce McPherson, has certified Diebold to be used in CA ........And we must stop this! My calls, and the calls from hundreds of other people were made, and were the first step in stopping Diebold.....

54. Nice work WCGreen!
Sounds like a bear of a job! Not one I'd want.

Let's see, today was a lighter day as politics go. Weekends I don't do as much (besides events) as I try to do most of my work when kids are in school.

Today I composed a letter and form for a membership drive mailing for one of the District's 14 counties. Part of an on-going project I'm doing. I also advised a US House campaign on fund raising issues, sent some example letters to a Co. chair (also a District vice-chair) who is working on a mailing effort there. Took panicky last minute call from yet another county with an annual event going on tomorrow. Issued reassurances it will be great, I will attend and that I can bring anything that was forgotten if need be, just call.

Lastly sent off a report of the week's doings to my "partners in crime".

Mostly I did laundry and drove teenagers to their various destinations (at least it seems so). :-)

Cheers,
Julie

PS I'd be interested to learn more about this campaign you drew up the budget for. What's the race look like? Good chance of winning...?

57. I'll be canvassing tomorrow
for Christine Cegelis in the Illinois 6th District in suburban Chicago. It is an open seat since she forced Henry Hyde to retire.

62. I'm working on a flyer to get people out for the THIRD ANNIVERSARY
of the Iraq War invasion.

But that's a damn good question--we need to ask ourselves this every day.

63. I can't do much lately
A physically disabling condition is restricting me from walking or sitting at my computer for any length of time right now but I'll go out to register minority voters again when I can walk with less pain.

...and on other days, as needed, I write LTTE's in response to some of the craziness on television 'news' shows. I send them to local newspapers when appropriate. This week, I am organizing a group of local Progressive Democrats to view Former Vice President Al Gore's NSA Speech and set goals for our involvement in local 2006 congressional elections.:patriot:
