http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/local/13960264.htmWith his re-election prospects murky, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday night asked 650 activists gathered in San Jose for the California Republican Party Convention to unite under the theme of boldly rebuilding the state.
``The future is not something you wait on. It is something you achieve. It is something you make happen,'' Schwarzenegger told California flag-waving convention delegates gathered in the elegant Fairmont Hotel ballroom. ``I say, let us renew our party by rebuilding our state. Let us become known as the party that believes in building California, the party that has the boldness to take the people forward.''
Political insiders were watching the 15-minute speech closely, to gauge whether Schwarzenegger could once again rally the party to his side. A series of recent, moderate moves have left questions about whether conservatives would abandon the governor this November, or just sit out the election.
Schwarzenegger received a standing ovation after his speech. But his biggest applause lines were not about his much-touted plan to borrow billions to rebuild the state's public works. Instead, the crowd roared when Schwarzenegger invoked the name of Sen. Tom McClintock, a candidate for lieutenant governor. They hissed when he mentioned Treasurer Phil Angelides, a Democratic candidate for governor. They cheered when he said the federal government must do more to secure California's borders, reiterated his opposition to taxes and advocated Jessica's Law, a ballot initiative aimed at sexual predators.
