Poll question: Do you have e-mail from right-wing relatives?
My sister married a guy I have some respect for. He's an ex-Marine, and he signed back on to the Navy last year. I haven't gotten around to talking politics with him but his family has some flaming wingunts in it!

How many of us have this situation?

Without getting into details this resulted in some flame-o-grams. In this poll, could you share any outrageous right-wing rants directed at you that you have gotten? Edit out any details that would identify anyone.

Caveat: Please think before you post. I do not want to get anyone into trouble for passing along e-mail that turns out to be recognized even though it is redacted. This is the reason I can't post mine. But I would like to see.

2. I have Wing Nut Kool-Aid drinkers
Option, "I avoid them at all costs" is the only thing I can recommend because they are so freaking insane.

3. maybe you could add
I have right wing relatives and I USED to get into arguments over politics with them. Now I steer clear either of politics or of them.

14. This is where I am, basically, Kali.
Husband deals with the wingnuts - he avoids political discussion, unless he's telling them off.

And he also hits 'reply all,' and replies to all of them in 'the circle.'

5. I don't really have any
Now I have a few friends who lean that way. One used to be in the Army. Totally brainwashed. Flip flops on everything too. We have had some contentious e-mails and phone conversations. We'd have surely come to blows once or twice if we had those convos in person. I regularly thrash him though. I dissect his arguments and get pretty ruthless on him. He never messes with me anymore, not after nearly three years of getting dressed down about his opinions, lol. We get along great otherwise, just have to stay away from politics. :)

6. Thankfully, my RW relatives don't send me political eMail.
I get tons of Born-again FluffMails from my mom,
but she wisely steers clear of politics.

7. I have some that SENT me emails
Big mistake for them; let's say they don't do that anymore, and avoid talking politics with me when we meet.

I don't take any crap or prisoners when discussing politics. And I absolutely won't put up with ignorant arguments.

11. Other: I have right-wing relatives and I stopped speaking to them
for the most part. (All of my immediate family and my relatives on my father's side.) They still send me stupid right-wing forwards from time to time, which I promptly report as spam.

I cannot penetrate the RW holier-than-thou, we have

12. I have just 2 right wing in-laws
One aunt, one brother-in-law. And they are so hopelessly outnumbered at family gatherings that they just sit and stare at their plates. My uncle (by marriage) is the head trouble maker, heh. He starts in on the latest BushCo idiocy every time we're together. I suspect he reads DU or truthout ... he's getting good info from somewhere.

I joined the ACLU last year and was labeled a Communist...plleeasse. I has so happy to have my relatives see my shiny new DU bumper sticker...I'm waiting to get rear ended. If that happens, can it be considered a Hate Crime?

16. This is even more interesting than I thought it would be
49 votes -- only one tolerable set of right wing relatives!

I like how many of you are willing to have the courage of your convictions and duke it out. Personally I have a hard time with that.

20. My parents are secular Bushbots -
Edited on Sat Feb-25-06 11:44 PM by Lady Effingbroke
basically set-in-their-ways Republicans who think anyone with an "R" after their name can do no wrong. They live in DeLay's district and see him (and Bush!) as aggrieved and wrongly put-upon.

In my parents' suburban neighborhood many people have yard signs supporting DeLay, (not my parents, although they do support him), and my mother and grandfather heard DeLay speak on the whole Social Security fiasco a while back and were completely hornswoggled by his smooth pitch for the latest snake-oil tonic.

My mother blames everything that has gone wrong in the past 40 years on the "Damn Democrats", and when the shit hits the fan, as is soon likely, she will no doubt blame it all on the "DD"s - the fact that Repubs have held the country hostage lock, stock, and barrel for the past 6+ years notwithstanding.

She also emails me right-wing glurge from time to time - as far as I am concerned, that is why the delete button was created.

My father is somewhat better - he understands that the war in Iraq is a terrible tragedy, but he has yet to connect the dots between the war and the greater general crimes of Bushco. Every time I have tried to point out that Bush is reponsible for this mess or mention impeachment, my father becomes angry.

I do not discuss politics with them very often, as it is generally counterproductive.

:sigh:

21. My family reflects the entire spectrum of politcal views-
the apolitical, Democrat, Republican, and increasingly rare conservative Democrat or liberal Republican.

Depending on the person, we change how we go about it. The worst of the worst, the religious right Republicans are on my wife's side. We don't talk to them much at all about politics or anything meaningful for that matter. Some of them are just wacko and can absolutely not handle rational discourse.

22. I have one far RW relative and no longer am in contact
with him. It takes too much energy to deal with him plus some other reasons the family is sick to death of him above and beyond his insane politics.
