"Your boat just became a flower pot, honey" (re: gas prices)
Our local teevee morning show was doing a live remoate from some marina or boat show (I'm not sure where it was). The in-studio yakker was asking some guy what he's paying for gas at the local marina. He sez: "3.39."

His wife sez: " Honey, your boat just became a flower pot."

2. Our neighbors have a summer "camp"
near a lake up north. They are planning on selling because the gas for the drive up for the weekend and gas for their pontoon boat is costing a fortune.

I am sure they are not alone.

If my kids make the baseball playoffs this year, they will miss part of vacation. I am not taking two cars 300 miles each way with prices the way they are, so if they make the playoffs, they miss vacation. They aren't upset, and neither am I. I think my wife and her family may actually enjoy the quiet.

5. Happened to my parents in the early seventies
They bought a big houseboat on Lake Michigan to spend weekends on. Then the oil embargo hit.

They took it out of the slip exactly three times. Then they sold it.

Our next (and last) boat was a small (8' or so) foam core "Sunfish" sailboat I used to ply the local lakes. At least it was light enough to carry.

4. Reminds me of a story....
when I was in the Army stationed in Germany, a guy I worked with was about to move back to the US. When the shipping company arrived to pack up his stuff, they refused to pack his canoe. The reasoning - the Army would not pay to ship a boat as part of personal property, it had to be shipped separately.

So he filled it with dirt, and planted a couple ferns inside. "Now its a planter, ship it"

6. HAHAHAHA! I like her style!
I used to get a kick out of sailboat snobbery when I lived on Cape Cod, all the sailors looking down their long blue noses at anyone who had a big, tacky powerboat (no bias here), and the pride they took at being able to exit a crowded harbor under sail.

Now they'll be the only ones on the water. It should be really nice for them without yahoos in cigarette boats thinking they're dead clever for doing doughnuts around sailing craft.

7. Sailing, Sailing
Price to run a big power boat on Lake Travis (Austin, Texas) for one weekend - $75.00

Price to run my 10hp 4cycle environmentally friendly Honda outboard on my 26 foot sail boat for one year - $7.50

Grin on my face as I pass the marinas full of power boats - Priceless

See ya all in NY for the peace rally next week!
