Barbarians at the Gate
Barbarians at the Gate

This post is an unapologetic parasite of an earlier post of mine, here:http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x2627363

I am neither defending nor berating Truthout. And, except by way of example, their story on Rove is not the subject of this thread. Rather, it is about the new media and the message it needs to send to the bloated, corpulent, cultish, lazy, elitist, personality driven conventional media.

Until they make their bones by breaking a big story and getting it right, each new media site is little more than just a blog.

They have no choice but to work harder than anyone else, get their shit **really** straight, and then run with what they believe to be true.

In this process, they'll get some stuff right ... and they'll get some stuff wrong. With our support, even after a 'wrong', they'll be there to do it again. In so doing, they'll be showing up the establishment media at their own game. David and Goliath.

Over the years we've been looking for an honest media. Not left or right. Just honest. A counter to the corporate/RW/Media cabal that spoon feeds crap from the powers that be. The corporate/RW/Media cabal that tells us what we are expected to know. And what we should believe.

The new media may well be our best current hope at countering the Great Wurlitzer. If they get enough stories right ... and get them before the conventional media .... and get them based on facts, they will put pressure on the conventiopnal media to do things right ...... or be VERY quickly shown to be irrelevant. Entertainment only. Tim Russert as Game Show Host.

None of this is to give the new media a pass on their journalistic standards. Indeed, it is a challenge to them to make DAMN sure their stories are solid. And then bulldoggedly STICK TO IT.

In the current dustup over this Rove story, the stakes are extraordinarily high. A little guy like Jason Leopold and a tiny left wing site like Truthout are up against the most powerful political parasite since Rapsutin.

If they get this one right, the media will ***indeed*** be on notice.

I sure hope they have their shit together over there at Truthout. While someone else will surely step into the breech should they go down in flames, there will also be a chorus of laughter aimed at lefty truthseekers. We're going to have get a whole case of TinFoilAway to overcome it.

But we shall perservere. We must. We have no choice.

2. there's nothing like a crusty old editor to reign in "enthusiasm"
...and I hope they have one over there. Editorial judgment comes with experience. In an established news organization, there would be protocols for fact checking and re-checking. I hope to God youthful exuberance doesn't muck up the Rove story reportage. I hope to God. I'm remembering Rather and Hatfield and Burkett and Doug Thompson.
