I thought this was a very interesting post, spending several hours with visitors from Russia, trying to explain why we call ourselves grassroots. That must be hard even with an interpretor. I liked this post.

Every morning at DFA HQup here in Burlington, Vermont, we have a 9:00 a.m. meeting for every staff member, volunteer and intern to share the upcoming day's tasks and plans before we all start our day's work. In a small office, it's a great way to keep abreast of every department's activities.
Today, our conference room was a little more crowded than usual. A group of Russian visitors filed in early this morning and joined us around the table. They were an eclectix mix of political activists, journalists, and election commissioners, and they joined us for several hours this morning to learn what DFA is all about.
Our Executive Director, Tom Hughes, explained the power of the grassroots, a word that doesn't translate so well into Russian, but a concept that communicates universally. Our guests had a lot of questions about our members. They asked how many had been elected to office—thirty, forty? No, Tom replied, closer to three hundred. They were impressed."
