1. If it weren't so obvious it would be a scandal
but because it is so obvious people feel uncomfortable admitting the undeniable truth.

2. Possibly...
...is it the end of the driving "season"?
Anyone have charts to see price patterns over the years?

11. For the past 6 years gas prices have been rising
If it wasn't one reason we were fed it was another - It's been a dramatic decrease in our area - almost 30 cents. It stayed near a $1 for gas for a couple years - now we have a 30 cent flex in just seasonal gas prices? I don't buy it.

20. Not the end quite yet....
Here in central Florida, vacation destination central, they went down about 10 cents a gallon -before- Labor Day, the last big vacation weekend of the year... Plus they were dropping when TS Ernesto (which was possibly going to be a hurricane) was barreling down on us... All of which is on top of that BP pipeline shut down, and violence in the middle east.

All are factors the gas companies have used in the past to explain rapidly rising gas prices. To be fair, price of a barrel has gone down, but the prices at the pump tend not to follow downward the price of crude so rapidly... (though it often shoots up with crude oil prices...)

21. But a major drop before Labor day?
Seems like BS to me. In Southern Maine it has gone down over thirty cents in two weeks. Plus now is almost the time of year when the oil industry typically uses the "changing blends" excuse to raise prices by a dime or more.

3. FYI
still over $3.20 a gallon around where I live. A drop of about .35 cents a gallon. Big deal. This is not enough of a drop to change anyone's mind about anything where I am, that is for sure.

17. couldn't agree more!
I went shopping the other day and the gas lines were outrageous. I thought what a frigging joke, possibly Bush Co. wanting quick pocket change or they are trying to make people feel good about the economy. I know whatever reason it is BS!

Edited on Mon Sep-04-06 03:19 PM by praeclarus
I almost always can't figure out where a poster is
when they state what is the gas price in their parts.

I paid 2.959 for regular unleaded on 8/31 in Santa Cruz,
CA area for and that was after my 10 cent Safeway discount.

edit: dang, I meant for this to be at the bottom of the thread...

The Oil Oligopoly: Turning Back Time to the Days of Standard Oil
by XicanoPwr, Thu Feb 02, 2006 at 01:05:25 PM EST

Ever since Exxon and Mobil merged back in 1999, ExxonMobil has become an oil juggernaut by raking in super-profits. As companies release their fourth-quarter earnings, ExxonMobil was trilled to announce their $10.7 billion earnings for the last quarter of 2005, ending year with $36.1 billion, making it the the largest annual reported net income in U.S. history

ExxonMobil's merger was a restoration John Rockefeller's Standard Oil, which was ordered the breakup in 1911. As a result of the landmark 1911 trust-busting case, the U.S. Supreme Court broke up Standard Oil into 30 separate oil companies. Standard Oil of New Jersey, with almost half of the total net value of all Standard Oil, became Exxon and Standard Oil of New York, with 9 percent of the company’s net value, became Mobil, creating the largest companies of the Standard Oil breakup. And now, ExxonMobile is largest single corporation in the world, surpassing General Electric.

However, ExxonMobil is not the only former Standard Oil company to see higher profits this year. Chevron (mergers of former Standard Oil of California and Standard Oil of Kentucky), ConocoPhillips (Conoco an original Standard company, CONtinental Oil COmpany, in the Rocky Mountain states) and BP (mergers of former Standard Oil of Ohio, Standard Oil of Indiana, Atlantic and Richfield) also reported higher earnings than the pervious quarter.

ConocoPhillips 4th qt $3.68bn (up 51%); annual $13.5bn
ChevronTexaco 4th qt $4.1bn (up 20%); annual 14.1bn
BP Expected to report their earnings on Feb. 7.

$2.37 is a 50% increase since Chimp climbed to the top of the tree.

Nothing to be thankful for.

Of course. Soon it might be over 4$ and people will be happy when it temporarily goes back to 3.60.
I guess that's how it works.

10. where I lived, it was UNDER a dollar in 2000 when the resident was
selected. I remember specifically when it went over a dollar, because it right after the selection, and an old man was filling up next to me, shaking his head angrily, and ranting that he had voted for a liar because Bush promised he was friends with the people who made the oil and would use his leverage to keep prices down.

I didn't say anything, because he was already convinced his vote was a mistake.

18. No doubt about it.
Remember the oil pipeline that had deteriorated and had to be shut down a week or two back? Usually, that would be a recipe for skyrocketing gasoline prices, but they have fallen from about $3.15 around Detroit, down to about $2.50 per gallon in just a couple of weeks. I think the GOP is going to drive the price down to $2.10 or so per gallon just prior to the election. I'm holding out for 99 cents a gallon, before I consider voting Republican.

They keep using the same playbook over and over and over.

With less and less and less of the result they want.

30. Said this at my work last week
Bunch of Bushbots. I simply stated that big oil "knows who butters their bread" and that prices would increase after midterms. Several of them nervously laughed, but no one outwardly disagreed with me. Of course, when they talk politics, I get right in the middle of it and let them have it. So they were probably a little leery of openly disagreeing with me.
