List TV appearances by Democrats speaking out against the Cover up
Edited on Thu Oct-05-06 01:58 PM by Dr Fate
And speaking oout against a proven liar, Louie Freeh, heading the investigation.

Also, list TV appearances by Elected DEMs who are asking "What else is the GOP congress covering up? Iraq? 9/11?"

Lets compile a long list of the elected Democrats who are on TV today, making political hay out of the lies and crimes of the GOP.

And please- if you are going to post the old excuse that "elected DEMS are not allowed on TV"- then please post the quote where the elected Democrat made the charge that he was denied access when he asked to be booked, or calimed to be censored from bringing up an issue on a TV interview or debate show.

Again- I want TV appearances - Not "releases" "conferences" or blurbs from DEM only web-sites.
No CSPAN either- we want shows that swing-voters will see and that will be in the echo chamber.

Also- please post links w/ transcripts if possible.

That is the point of this thread- to compile a list of DEMS who are not too frightened to go on TV and take on the GOP/media over this cover up.

She held a press conference and the media didn't show it. Surprise surpise.

In any event, keeping this focused on Republicans depended on not turning it into a partisan monkey shit slinging match which would end up with it having no affect at all.

Or at the least, showing me the links (from the present or recent past) where elected DEMS charge that they were refused access to or ordered not to discuss certain topics on interview or debate show appearances.

How do I prove your point- I aksed for TV apprearances, already conceding that "conferences" dont work for us- you failed to give me an example as of yet.

We already know the media refuses to spread our talking points for us by showing our "conferences"- my point is we need to spread our OWN talking points in forums that we DO have access to.

Pelosi HAS access to TV debate shows. I've seen her on them w/ my own eyes.

Edited on Thu Oct-05-06 03:22 PM by Dr Fate
If you go back and look at any of my old arguments- I always count statements that were "hot" enough to find themselves repeated in the echo chamber.

Ideally, Dean needs to go on and say it again himself-just in case it does not get repeated again or it is "forgotten", dont you agree?

Accusing me of hurting DEMS by posting a thread were we highlight their fighting TV appearances?

It only hurts them (and us, and the nation)if they fail to do so. You act like the ball is in my court on this.

If you don't think the Dems are working on this in many ways, then you are just not aware.

I see their hands all over events everyday, much more effective than gong on TV and yelling at Pat Buchanan about gays or immigrants.

You and another just harmed a good post I made till no one wanted to post in it. It happens all the time here.

The Dems are working all over the place, they are using many tactics.

But in your mind, if they don't say it on TV, which only reaches a few, it does not count.

If the Foley scandal was not on TV, it would be a blip- like the DSM or the Gannon thing.

If it aint on TV, it pretty much didnt happen- if you dont see that, then you are living in a bubble.

I count Dean's statement that was "hot" enough to get repeated on TV- I am glad he crafted a statement that found its way into the echo chamber on this. He gets full credit for that.

Now about further, personal TV appearances on the cover-ups- you do agree that Dean should do that, right?

Edited on Thu Oct-05-06 04:20 PM by Dr Fate
We should consider this fact and demand that DEMS with media access use this outlet- as opposed to crafting excuses and making a truly outrageous suggestion that TV does not really matter.

If cable news is nothing, then why has every Repub & his brother been on it for the past 48 hours doing damage control and trying to balme Democrats?

You are bending the reality of the media echo-chamber in order to rationalize why DEMS are not fighting harder to get their take on this issue into said chamber.

Go ahead- pretend that TV is just a novelty as far as politics go-rather than questioning strategies that failed us before- but that wont gurantee any victories for us.

Do you have a single, solitary example of DEMS winning a fight when our strategy was to sit back and "let them fall on their own swords" or "played rope a dope?" or "let the media handle it?"

36. Well, this is not on TV, thus it does not count.....but here it is.
This is the press release from Dean about Hastert's press conference.
But it won't count because Wolf only gave it about 20 seconds.

""What Republicans don't understand is that this is about children, not politics. People are looking at this as concerned parents, not as Republicans or Democrats. It's disgraceful that Speaker Hastert and the Republican leadership didn't stand up for our children and do the right thing when they learned about the problem years ago, rather than a week after it became public. They chose to protect Congressman Foley and their party instead of the victims. Americans don't want to see finger pointing from the Republican leadership, they don't want to see the Speaker dodging tough questions. They want to see the people involved unequivocally stand up, take responsibility for their failures and investigate immediately."

It's a shame the way Democratic leaders are treated here.

You know it, I know it, and I would think Dean and the others, by now, should know that the media does not feel obligated to repeat our talking points for us via "conferences" and "releases."

Now- if someone repeats this on TV- then I would have to admit the talking point was effective enough to get into the echo chamber- lets hope for the best.

The SURE FIRE way is to skip the "conferences" and "releases" and go straight to the TV shows that do allow access. Whcih is one theme that this thread adresses.

I hope I am wrong-butdo you honestly believe that inserting talking points into the TV media echo chamber is a bad idea for us? Why?

We should be spreading our position that the GOP lies about & covers up EVERYTHING using EVERY available forum- including the most popular one- the TV. ESPECIALLY when they are all on TV continuing their lying & cover-ups by blaming Democrats.

You seem to trust the DEM "strategists" who lost the last 3 elections more than I do.

I have seen this "let them fall on their own swords" presented as an excuse for not fighting before- it did not work in the past.

Edwards in 2004 used the "local media" strategy too- it also failed.

I hope you are right and I am wrong- I for one am flabbergasted that DEMs are not on TV driving home their points about GOP lies & cover-ups.

I dont see why you object to say, Howard Dean, or Obama, going on TV and saying "What else is the the GOP coverin up and lying about? Iraq? 9/11? Will they refuse to go under oath about all of this like everything elese????" I think it would be a home run.

believe the Democrats need more air time, but a lot of the blackout is due to media being selective. A clip of Rove at a private event is more likely to be aired than an official press conference by a Democrat.

Edited on Thu Oct-05-06 06:39 PM by Dr Fate
I say that for 2 reasons:

1.- I have seen them on the Deabte shows with my own eyes

2.I have never heard an elected DEM say he was denied access to those shows, or ordered not to discuss certain topics. Certainly not the "top" household name, leadership DEMS, at the least.

If elected DEMS are being denied access to these shows or being censored as much as DUers say they are- and DEMS are not loudly and repeatedly SAYING this is the fact , then I see 2 problems, not one.

I concede that the media often refuses to repeat our talking points by showing our "conferences" or "releases"- You know it, I know it- when are the "strategists" going to learn this fact?

We can repeat our talking points in the forums that we DO have access to. If we dont have access to those shows, then I need to hear the "banned" Democrats say so- loud & clear.

Kerry has mentioned that the GOP has a bigger megaphone. The media and many of the journalists who work for these outlets are simply biased. Calling out bias:

In NH:

(In addition to NH, Kerry has said similar things on local TV in Iowa, Ohip and FL - Remember in 2004, he was able to get far better, deeper coverage with the local news people. Kerry's been out there.)A few weeks ago, Kerry did the rounds of Hardball, Anderson Cooper, Imus, Paula Zahn, and a few progressive radio shows speaking on the same issues plus the torture bill.

Kerry is promoting people having house parties to watch the film on war profiteering in Iraq and how it hurts the trrops:

Demanding hearing on almost everything you mentioned.

That and he got his call to have a summit in Iraq into the defense bill, as a sense of the Senate resolution.

47. If Kerry was on local TV- we now have 6- out of potentially hundreds.

Good for Kerry- we will count it even though it was not national- in the interest of buffering the list.

I do have to take issue with you saying that the Kerry/Edwards "local media" strategy was as effective as you suggest- in that they lost the election rather than winning it.

They should have been on CNN, etc nearly every night by sattellite as well us using the local media- just like we should be doing now.

As it was, you may recall the "Where is Edwards?" meme that cropped up as a result of that failed-(or at best incomplete) strategy.

51. I was speaking in relative terms
Edited on Thu Oct-05-06 06:49 PM by karynnj
I was watching 2004 from Blue NJ. Regular network news and cable TV had very weak coverage of Kerry. The norm in all other years was that the candidates were covered. In 2004, they typically showed Bush and you heard him, then they went to the Kerry campaign and showed their reporter who summarized where Kerry was and what he said if you got 2 sentences from Kerry you were doing good.

CSPAN had great coverage, but some of the coolest things to watch were inerviews on local TV in areas Kerry was in. They actualy let him speak. (The Kerry blog had links).

I agree it reaches fewer people - but it is in a friendlier format that lets him actually explain why we should change. The key think is that he is helping the local candidates in 2006. So, he's doing at least 2 things at one time.

(I included the movie thing - as it is another way to communicate.)

52. Yes- everyone knows that "conferences" and "releases" are ignored.
Everyone except the DEM strategists, apparently.

We seem to expect the GOP owned media to repeat all of our "releases" and obscure conferences for us- they wont.

That is why, if you re-read my OP- I adressed this- we DO have access to the debate/interview shows though- and once on we can say pretty much whatever we want.

54. True - and Kerry's been on them
Hardball, Blitzer, Anderson, Zahn and a few others last year. Cable new has much lower viewership that the network's . It depends on the host how much freedom you have.

My point is that in the last month Kerry has:

- Like others, has worked hard for 2006 candidates
- Developed and articulated a complete agenda and has been out explaining it.
- Has introduced legislation on Afghanistan (with Feingold), on supplementary ballots(with Feingold) and Global Warming (with Snowe)
- Did a great job on the SFRC with the NATO US general in Afghanistan
- Was one of the MOST visible against the terror bill along with Leahy and Kennedy

55. Cable has lower viewership- but it is ESSENTIAL to the echo chamber.
Refer to:

Clinton Scandals
Gary Condit
Gore tried to steal the election, not Bush
WMDS
Saddam caused 9/11
Clinton caused 9/11
Micheal Moore is the "real liar"
Democrats took money from Abramoff too
Terry Schivo is really alive
Swiftboat Vets
Dan Rather is the "real liar"
Foley
etc, etc, etc

Foley as well as all of these stories would be blips w/o the cable news echo-chamber.

On all of the past stories I listed, we failed to take on media bias or the cable news echo chamber- lets not make the same mistake on the Foley thing.
