Sen. Boxer/PAC For a Change email. The scandal and Senate races.

Dear friend,

I have wrestled with the decision to write to you about the House page scandal boiling over in Washington. In the end, I can't stand by as the Republican leadership in Congress again blatantly ignores the common good, especially when it comes to protecting young people in their charge.

I can hardly believe my eyes and ears as I watch the party of "family values" duck and cover while a scandal unfolds that they could have stopped a long time ago.

I can hardly believe my eyes and ears as I watch excuse after excuse over a set of e-mails that any parent would immediately know is not only inappropriate but a prelude to a predator's first steps - winning the trust of a young person before taking full advantage of that trust.

I knew I couldn't trust the Republican leadership to protect Social Security and Medicare.

I knew I couldn't trust them to honor their responsibility to respect the checks and balances written into the Constitution when it comes to standing up to the Bush Administration on this horrific war.

I knew I couldn't trust them to protect the environment.

I knew I couldn't trust them to protect a woman's right to choose.

I knew I couldn't trust them to protect the middle class when they owe their very existence to the special interests.

But I truly thought I could trust them to protect the young people who serve as Congressional pages and who count on them. By any standard, the Republican leadership has sickeningly failed not only these young people but the American people as well.

And still there are many disturbing issues yet to be answered by the Republicans, including:

Why did Congressman Alexander, who was contacted by the fearful parents, take the issue to the head of the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee but didn't tell the only Democrat on the Page Board? Was it considered a "political" matter rather than an ethics or criminal matter, as it clearly seemed to be?

Was Foley's $100,000 contribution to the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee that was accepted in July AFTER the Republican leadership knew of his e-mails some kind of hush money?

This mess comes at a time when the United States government has never been viewed with less respect in the world. We are seen as arrogant and militant.

The Congress has a twenty-five percent approval rating. I wouldn't be surprised if it goes down to ZERO. It should -- and it's making me sick.

So where am I heading with this? I am asking you once more to step up and save this country. This latest example of an abdication of responsibility just adds to our resolve to take our country back.

The Republicans can't be trusted to look out for our kids, and they can't be trusted to look after our country. It's time for Democrats to take back Congress.

You and our entire PAC for a Change online community have been so wonderful. You have kept up my spirits and the spirits of all the candidates we have helped together -- you've made over $450,000 in contributions so far to our candidates.

You can't believe how our PAC for a Change community is viewed by our great Democratic House and Senate candidates. The world is in a mess and there's nobody home -- not in the House, not in the Senate, and not in the White House, three institutions that the Republicans own. You get this and that's why you answer my call every single time.

So how about this? Can you dig down again -- for $10, $25, $50, or whatever you can afford -- and make three contributions to three women who are out there for our families every day and who I promise you will always stand up and protect our children?

1. Missouri Senate candidate Claire McCaskill learned first-hand the importance of protecting children when she was a prosecutor in Kansas City. She established a special Domestic Violence Unit to combat domestic violence and child abuse, and the violent crime rate in the city dropped 45% during her tenure. Sending her to Washington would add a strong advocate for children's safety to our nation's capital, while also replacing Bush rubber-stamper Jim Talent.

2. Minnesota Senate candidate Amy Klobuchar is currently the chief prosecutor for her state's largest county where she has fought to lock up predatory sex offenders. She is running to clean out the corruption in Washington, something we clearly need now more than ever. But her opponent has already unleashed a vicious smear campaign against Amy on the state's airwaves, and she needs our help to fight back.

3. Yours truly -- Barbara Boxer's PAC for a Change. Our PAC is a growing force for change in Washington, DC and across America. Now dig a little deeper, and we'll help our tremendous Democratic House and Senate candidates take it across the finish line.
We must change course -- and with your continued help, we will.

My best,

Signed

Barbara

P.S. Please contribute to Claire McCaskill, Amy Klobuchar, and my PAC for a Change -- 3 women who can help Democrats take back Congress this November -- and clean up the Republican culture of corruption in Washington, DC. Thanks so much for your continued support!
