Alexander, Frist stepping up efforts to aid Corker

Tennessee’s Republican U.S. Senators Lamar Alexander and Bill Frist are stepping up their efforts to influence the state’s ultra-tight Senate race, weighing in on behalf of GOP nominee Bob Corker and training their fire on Democratic Rep. Harold Ford Jr.

...

Last week, both Alexander and Frist lent four senior staff members – including Alexander’s chief of staff Tom Ingram – to the Corker campaign after a reshuffling of the staff saw the firing of campaign manager Ben Mitchell.

In addition, Alexander wrote a letter on his personal letterhead dated “Monday Morning” to Republican voters statewide saying he’s “doing everything I can to help (Corker) between now and election day and I hope you will too.”

In the letter, Alexander made what appeared to be a direct reference to Ford’s well-known family, one of the most politically powerful in the state’s history.

“His opponent is part of one of Memphis’ oldest powerful political machines,” Alexander wrote. “I don’t think we want to turn Bill Frist’s Senate seat over to a political machine.”

Oh, the irony ...
