1. And because at the heart of most socialist thought is
that we are all entitled to the same opportunity. This doesn't mean the kind bootstrap, wild-west bullshit espoused by the convervatives. This means real, viable access for all. In short, providing high quality, publically funded access to elmentary, secondary AND UNIVERSITY (or for those not interested, trade, technical or speciality) education. It means abandoning, once and for all, the ROI model of human worth (MBA's should be shipped off to mars, imo), and investing in people and society first!

But this is not in the interest of the current social structure.

Economic justice is what we are aiming at (for those of us that hang on to the dream of democratic socialism). Economic justice means that we would invest, once again, in building and maintaining a "middle class". In other words, ensuring a reasonable level of economic stability and a fair work/life balance for everyone. Once people feel stable and supported (and do not need to worry about working two jobs to make ends meet, ect.), they are much more likely to take up activities that truly are luxuries of the middle class - investment in the political process being a key part of this. And THIS directly threatens the old system under which we currently flail and twist.

2. Because they are profoundly against democracy . . .
Capitalism is the system for robber barons. That's who and what the repukes represent.

They don't care about government. All that matters to them is their money.

3. Are Democratic officials in favor of socialism?
1. Any of various theories or systems of social organization in which the means of producing and distributing goods is owned collectively or by a centralized government that often plans and controls the economy.

2. The stage in Marxist-Leninist theory intermediate between capitalism and communism, in which collective ownership of the economy under the dictatorship of the proletariat has not yet been successfully achieved.

5. No, No, They Love Socialism...
As Gore Vidal said. They want,"socialism for themselves and capitalism for everyone else".

Or as someone else once said, "privatize the profits and socialize the risk".

Look at the NFL owners. They're the biggest bunch of socialists on the planet.

7. Socialist here
Jon Stewart is one of us, too (see Wikipedia).
Get rid of the red crap, Lenin and "comrade" talk, it's a pretty good system.

10. The word "socialism" is meaningless.

I stopped attatching any meaning to the word "Socialism" after Tony Blair claimed he was a socialist, and Ken Livingstone claimed he wasn't.

It can be used to mean anything from "out and out Maoist communism" to "support for slight tax rises". That includes a hell of a lot of things I'm in favour of, and a hell of a lot of things I'm not (and many positions contradicting one another).

If someone asks "are you a socialist", the only meaningful way to answer is "I support X, Y and Z but not P or Q, you tell me"; it's almost never worth saying "I am a socialist" or "I am not a socialist" - it may be a personality statement, but it doesn't say much about what your politics are.

11. That sounds about right--
the right-wing model seems to be that corporations are valuable because they generate income (uh, that would be for the wealthy) but people (you know, the people who work and buy stuff) aren't really all that valuable. 'Cause there's so *many* of them, you know, and the money only spreads so far. Can't just have *everybody* walking around with affordable housing and health plans and such.

And uh, they just like hating stuff:
