Rice chats up the 6+2

http://www.tehrantimes.com/Description.asp?Da=10/5/2006&Cat=14&Num=1

U.S. officials are trying to return Iraq to the Saddam era since they are very concerned about the increasing influence of Iraq’s majority, which has an ideological connection with Iran.

That is why the meetings between U.S. Ambassador to Baghdad Zalmay Khalilzad and the leaders of Iraqi minority groups and even with leading Baathists have increased. It seems that the U.S. is trying to weaken Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki’s government and give a more active role to former members of the Baath Party.

In light of Washington’s wrongheaded actions in Lebanon, Iraq, and Palestine, it seems that the Rice trip will yield no significant fruit and is meant for domestic consumption rather than to have a regional or international impact because the Republicans’ fortunes are waning and they are desperate for votes in the upcoming congressional elections.
