A state lawmaker said today that presidential prospect John McCain incorrectly listed his name among several Iowa Republicans who had signed on as early supporters in the lead-off caucus state.
Rep. Dave Heaton of Mount Pleasant was identified in a statement by McCain’s political action committee Thursday as one of 13 legislators to have endorsed the Arizona senator, who is taking steps toward a second bid for president.
Heaton said he had met with McCain recently, but insisted during their meeting that he would remain neutral indefinitely and was “very disappointed” by the error.
“I have a great deal of respect for the senator, but I am not endorsing his candidacy at this time,” said Heaton, who met recently with McCain in Washington, D.C. “I also made it clear to them that I would not be making any decision as to which potential candidate I will be supporting.”
