Log Cabin GOP says hundreds of thousands of gays
want to vote GOP and teach the straights in the party on accepting the gays. Good luck. I'm sure Tony Perkins, James Dobson, Falwell, etc are welcoming you with open arms. C'mon. Face reality. The big tent has shrunk to less than the size of a pup tent.

10. Gays and lesbians made up about 4% of the vote in 2004.
Edited on Tue Oct-10-06 02:09 AM by elperromagico
That's about 4.5-5 million votes. About 20% of them voted for Bush, approximately 1.1 million voters. So "hundreds of thousands" isn't entirely impossible, though I do think this guy is engaging in a bit of hyperbole.

It's still a ridiculous concept. The GOP is never going to give gay Republican voters any credit. Their numbers simply aren't significant enough in comparison to conservatives, neo-cons, and fundamentalists - and those groups by and large want gays out of the party.

14. IF that 1.1M had voted Democrat, we would have won by a big
enough landslide that the Diebold machines would not have made a difference.

The question is- how to show these people that they need to be Democrats. Educating them is what needs to be done.

29. Sorry, I don't think so.
The diebold machines would have changed more votes, that's all.

Go figure. It makes no sense to me. Why would I want to join a group that flatly hates everything about me? I mean, the Groucho Marx joke is one thing, but this is ridiculous.

11. I really don't understand this,
Edited on Tue Oct-10-06 02:14 AM by policypunk
I can't understand why these people would want anything to do with the Republicans.

Making the assumption for the moment that they are not schizophrenics, what could they possibly stand for that is not represented within the Democrats?

Given the lifestyle and income of many of them, I suppose I could see a fair number of them being arch fiscal conservatives. But fiscal conservatism is perfectly well represented within the democrats. Maybe they really like taxcuts - but I would think rejecting those who would hang them in the street might come before saving a few bucks at tax time.

but what do I know, I am not gay or a republican. Maybe they are just like the NASCAR types who think representing themselves as Republicans will make people think their rich.

13. Exactly so, back of the bus please!
First off, I'm an old straight guy so maybe I am not qualified to comment about this. But it seems clear to me that there have been a lot of closeted gays working as staffers for Republicans in Congress. From what has come out recently Tom DeLay and others have blackmailed many of them to do his bidding, or else be ousted from their well-paid jobs.

DeLay has been brought down by his own corruption which is fortunate for all of us. But the problem remains that Republicans are glad to use the talents of bright gay people, as long as they remain in the closet. There will never be a place IMO for gays in the Republican party as long as the party panders to gay-bashers among the self-righteous religious community, who are themselves not true Christians.

Fortunately there is a place of welcome for gays in our Democratic party. We are indeed a big tent and we welcome all who share our political values. Our political leaders are not afraid to appear with gays, unlike the Republicans. Recently Nancy Pelosi and Hilary Clinton have been criticized for appearing and marching in parades that included gays. That criticism is going nowhere as we remain unafraid.

We are indeed a party of true Christian values IMO as we offer a helping hand to the poor among us rather than turning our backs on them. We also place the burden of necessary taxes on those who can afford them and not on the backs of the average citizens who are struggling to get ahead. Indeed gays will find a welcome here where they do not have to remain in the closet. I love our party, don't you?

15. Not only are the Repukes glad to use the talents of bright gays,
as long as they stay in the closet, but they are extra glad they're gay, because it gives them extra leverage over these staffers. An extra-marital affair or two can be forgiven, and aren't too bad a scandal, but gayness? They know that these staffers will be finished in the GOP if it's revealed, and they deliberately use it. The public may accept one or two gay staffers, working for the most liberal Repuke congressman, but several? It's the perfect way to make sure they do their bidding.

tolerate only because his much younger partner is a a delightful liberal who loves to tweak his man. When my guy and I visit, the 3 of us give the asshole hell...

I've met many homosexual conservatives in gay bars here in Mississippi. They have no clue, and mostly appear to be fixated on paying lower taxes, HATING Hillary Clinton and feigning religiosity. They make me ill.

25. Kind of like the gay organization Dignity
Dignity is composed of gay and lesbian Catholics who are trying to influence the Catholic Church from within. Good luck on that one, as well. Maybe in about 500 years.

lesbians I know are Democrats. A gay Republican is an even rarer bird than a black Republican.
