Voters in the 5th like voters all over America are yearning for change and the leadership to make America more secure. I can win this race but I need your help today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ON-QCHeDtfg"If there was any question as to whether the 5th Congressional District race was shaping up to be a nasty political barnburner, Thursday night’s City Hall debate resoundingly answered it in the affirmative.
In a one-on-one showdown, Congressional hopefuls Republican State Sen. Doug Lamborn and retired Air Force Lt. Col. Jay Fawcett, the Democrat, grappled over many divisive issues, especially the war in Iraq and terrorism.
But, it was the moments of rancor that stole the show.
"Excuse me sir, why don’t you keep your mouth shut?" said Lamborn, scolding an audience member who was asking a question at the same time the state senator was speaking.
Lamborn later apologized to the man.
But, the incident typified a debate that yielded strong, contrasting opinions by the two candidates, who spoke to an emotional audience that truly represented a microcosm of the existing polarized political climate nationwide.
Fawcett made several efforts throughout the debate to remind those in attendance that he served during Desert Storm, saying at one time, "I put my life where my mouth is." He believes the current war in Iraq has distracted the U.S. from fighting terrorism.
"You don’t win a global war on terror by attacking every country that is bad," he said.
Fawcett also said we should use our military resources wisely.
"Be careful when you think that every tool you have is a hammer, because every problem starts looking like a nail," he said."
