Candidate decries sign vandalism ("Child molester")
BANGOR, Maine — Dozens of campaign signs promoting the Knox County Republican candidate for sheriff were plastered with "child molester" stickers overnight Monday.

"It´s pretty despicable," GOP hopeful Alfred Ockenfels said at the Rockport police station. "Obviously, someone is trying to derail my candidacy."

Ockenfels, a former Rockland police chief, defeated incumbent Sheriff Daniel Davey in the June primary and is running in the Nov. 7 election against Democrat Donna Dennison, a sheriff´s detective, and independent Todd Butler, who is chief deputy of the sheriff´s office.

"It´s disgusting and vile," Ockenfels told the Bangor Daily News. "My supporters and family are outraged."

I have no idea what's behind this. I saw it on the local news this morning. I wonder what the real story is?

1. If the vandal has facts, he should make them public
Otherwise, the accusation is slander and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

2. This transcends party politics
I don't care which party this candidate belongs to, or the party of the person(s) attaching the stickers. I think it's wrong in any case and I agree with you.

3. His campaign may have done it themselves.
Rove has done that.
