Marino calls penalty on candidateBY JERRY BERRIOS

Football star Dan Marino moved to block State Rep. Susan Goldstein from using his name or picture in her campaign ads. A campaign mailer featuring football Hall-of-Famer Dan Marino has sparked a Super Bowl-size flap.
State Rep. Susan Goldstein, a Weston Republican, sent voters a flier including a picture of her with the former Miami Dolphins quarterback that described their work helping children with autism.
The problem: Marino doesn't endorse political candidates.
Marino's camp felt that Goldstein's flier clearly crossed the political line of scrimmage by implying an endorsement.
''He has never publicly endorsed a political candidate,'' said Ralph Stringer, president of NeoStar Sports & Entertainment and Marino's business manager.
Goldstein came back with a prepared written statement: ``I am proud of what Dan Marino and I accomplished together and I believe he is as well. That is all that I was communicating to the voters. I regret that Dan's business handlers feel otherwise.''

Goldstein, whose daughter has autism, sponsored a bill passed by the Legislature this year that mandates special certification for swim teachers at public pools who teach children with developmental and physical disabilities. The bill allocated money for the program, including $185,000 to the Dan Marino Foundation to implement and operate it.
Marino -- who also has an autistic child -- was a supporter of the bill and appeared publicly with Goldstein to champion its passage.
But his representatives said he never gave Goldstein permission to transfer that support to her reelection campaign.
Marino received the flier in the mail.
''She was contacted,'' Stringer said. ``It didn't stop.''
That's when they sent a formal notice asking her to pull all ads with his name or photo.
Goldstein's challenger in the November election says he is not surprised.
''So far, she has run a very negative, dirty campaign based on lies,'' said Martin Kiar. ``Once again, she was trying to lie to voters as a means of getting their votes. That is wrong.''

These people are consumed by intrusiveness, deceit and greed for power. It makes me sick to look at what passes for *leadership* in *'s Republican Party.
