Bush won't leave Iraq, even if "Laura & Barney are my only supporters"

Woodward: Bush Says He Will Not Withdraw From Iraq Even If Laura And Barney The Dog Are The Only Ones Supporting Him...

60 Minutes | Posted October 1, 2006 07:59 PM
READ MORE: Iraq, Bob Woodward, George W. Bush

From 60 Minutes Interview With Bob Woodward:

Mike Wallace: And Woodward says that no matter what's occurred in Iraq, Mr. Bush does not welcome any pessimistic assessments from his aides, because he is sure that his war has Iraq and America on the right path.

Bob Woodward: Late last year, he had key Republicans up to the White House to talk about the war, and said 'I Will Not Withdraw Even If Laura And Barney Are The Only Ones Supporting Me.' Barney is his dog."

1. Problem is: HE'S not in Iraq.
He is more than welcome to go there and stay as far as I'm concerened. Might be good for him. He could research a lot of issues he has pontificated on but knows nothing about.

Our troops, on the other hand, need to come home.

"Oh, somewhere in Guantanamo the sun is shining bright
A gay band is playing in Frisco, where hearts are skipping light
And somewhere Dems are laughing, as Congress is made anew
But there’s no joy for Dubya – Laura and dog Barney voted Blue!"

4. I wouldn't be too sure of Barney ...
He looks kind of dismayed by the current state of affairs.

7. This really isn't funny.
This kind of blinders-on, never compromise/budge, intransigence is deeply disturbing about his state of mind.

10. My apologies
to the sincerely religious, but to me this is symptomatic of the brainwashing of fundamentalist religions. They teach people to reject logic and take things on "faith". They pound into people's heads that if you are tempted to question the dogma, it is the devil whispering in your ear, testing you, and the more appealing the contrary evidence appears, the harder you have to dig in to resist the devil.

You might as well give people lobotomies when you short-circuit their critical thinking skills in this way. Their brains don't develop properly.

Many people who "recover" from chemical dependency adopt a similar stance. They become obsessed with having things "just so". They fixate on a very narrow-minded version of "reality", and deny anything to the contrary. The fact is the temptation to "fall off the wagon" is huge, particularly in the early stages of "the cure", and for many it requires adopting the same single-minded unquestioning, unwavering focus on keeping to the straight and narrow. My Dad told me that the expression "demon rum" used by the Temperance movement was not as far-fetched as you might thing. He said it calls to you like the Lorelei. Of course it is all in ones head, cravings stimulated by chemical reactions, but nevertheless, the psychological result is "temptation" just as the devil's tempting is described by religions. So curing an addict involves some level of brainwashing as well.

So take someone who is both a "recovering" alcoholic and also "born again" and see how much open-mindedness you'll find! Add whatever oedipal issues bush has (and they appear strong, from a strictly layman viewpoint) and you have a recipe for disastewr. Ok, now put that disaster in th emost powerful position in the world, and see what you get. duh!

11. It's a political formulation of course. Truly disgusting.
War and whimsy. Leave it to Bush to find the humor and whimsy in a human disaster he caused.

If Bush had said he would withdraw even if Dick Cheney was the only one supporting him, it would have been closer to the truth.
