In skilled political hands, Schwarzenegger campaign hums
Two key GOP operatives credited for reversing governor's political fortunes

When Steve Schmidt and Matthew Dowd arrived at the Capitol early this year, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger had been battered by voters who rejected his ballot initiatives and was facing a tough re-election.

Working with a revamped staff in the Governor's Office, the two campaign operatives have helped reverse Schwarzenegger's political fortunes -- Schmidt as the day-to-day manager and Dowd as chief strategist.

Schmidt, 36, and Dowd, 45, are, in fact, former Bush-Cheney operatives. But they are also not strangers to Democratic politics and have helped the Republican governor reposition himself as a centrist.

Working with Karl Rove, the architect of Bush's political career, Dowd was the chief strategist for the 2004 Bush campaign, where he oversaw all media, message development, targeting and research. Schmidt ran the campaign's vaunted rapid-response operation.

Schwarzenegger also hired a new chief of staff, Democrat Susan Kennedy. She worked with Dowd on Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign and is also employed as a consultant by the Schwarzenegger campaign.

for want of real issues. S. and Angeledes aren't saying anything substantial so we're only left with namecalling and a cult of personality, which is not unlike the World Wrestling Federation's Smackdown Saturday.

I wish it weren't a scandal if the best person to work for a republican is a democrat.

PS I agree w/ your original post: it's bad that Rove-prodigies are running Arnold's campaign. They might have kept this race from being anything about issues.
