Nicaragua votes to outlaw abortion

Nicaragua on Thursday night voted to outlaw all forms of abortion, including operations to save a pregnant woman's life, after a campaign by the Catholic church.

The report on the WSJ - where I first read it, said that "leftist legislators backed it to improve Ortega's odds to win"

2. Nicaragua's current gov't isn't leftist, IIRC...
the current president, Bolanos, was anti-Sandinista in the 1980s, and is opposed by Nicaragua's liberal parties.

This is just from memory though. I could definitely be wrong.
