"...by God you don't do it..." where? "...in mass public places?" Is that what he said? I really had a hard time understanding his accent.

I listened them before the debacle, but that was about it. Afterwards, I went out and bought everything they had out. And I love it.

I may buy two copies of this just to piss off Free Republic :)

17. The Red Cross comment is totally misleading... Here is why...
The American Red Cross does NOT take funds that come with a string. In exchange for their contribution, they wanted to use the Red Cross name on their tour which was highly political at the time. The Red Cross maintains a policy of neutrality and cannot endorse any particular movement.

I completely support the Dixie Chicks and believe in what they are doing. That being said, the Red Cross refusing the funds was a good idea for the purpose of neutrality. The Red Cross does not discriminate in who it provides services to and cannot take donations that are attached to a politically charged tour. That would have been disasterous for an organization that depends upon volunteers and individual donations to provide emergency relief services.

This movie is great and I hope people see it. That statement about the Red Cross in the trailer however is disappointing.

19. And you know this how?
All I ever heard was that the Red Cross (guess who is the Honorary Chairman) refused their donation. Never heard anything about strings attached.

20. The "million dollar" comment is a teaser to interest people in the film.
A trailer is to make people sit up and pay attention and push their buttons about watching this type of film. It certainly intrigues me that a million dollars was refused, as I have donated many times to the Red Cross in the past.

If the Red Cross has a problem with that assertion in the trailer, they need to make a statement about it. FWIW, a friend of mine worked at a high level in the RC bureaucracy, and he is not amused by the games they play when it comes to money, power, and politics. Sorry, he didn't go into details, so I can't elaborate.

I seem to remember the Red Cross fumbling the ball with Katrina, too. Maybe I'm mistaken.

wanted to use the Red Cross logo on their tour... The Red Cross has to be very careful about the use of its name as to not create the perception of endorsement. This would have been disasterous for donations.

Yes, there IS beaucracy as there is with any organization. I don't like it either. As far as Katrina, the Red Cross learned a lot about responding to large scale disasters. One of the biggest things, that FEMA under Bush is a joke and two, No one was totally prepared for a disaster of this scale. That being said, they performed great within the scope of the mission and within the boundaries as set by the department of homeland security and FEMA. Prior to Bush taking office, FEMA was actually a great organization.

What I will say is that because of some of the fraud that did occur, background checks are now required for ALL employees and ALL volunteers. This will be complete by the end of this year. The mission of the American Red Cross is to prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Its an immediate response organization. Long term response is not what 'they' do best. Immediate sheletering, food, and relief is what the Red Cross is about.

23. Thank you for the detailed explanation.
In that case, the Chicks were wrong to want to use the Red Cross logo. OTOH, maybe they wanted to promote the Red Cross, too, showing their support, so to speak.

I don't know anything about the Red Cross bureaucracy, but if it's like any other large organization, there are power struggles that get in the way of actually accomplishing the job. It's good to know the RC is trying to rise above the bureaucratic problems.

By the way, I didn't make myself clear. My friend is still proud of the Red Cross and happy that he was able to work for them for 15 years. But, like most people, the obstacle of bureaucracy frustrated him.
