Do you want to help remove Rolling Stone's 3rd worst
congressman, Don Young? Democrat Diane Benson has come from 30 points down to within 9 in just four weeks in what everybody thought would be an uncompetitive race. This has been a 100 percent grassroots campaign with no help from the national party, and we really do have a shot at closing the gap with just a little more exposure. Alaska is a very expensive state to campaign in -- 1/5 the size of the rest of the US with about as many miles of road as Rhode Island. Almost all travel has to be done by boat or plane. THIS IS ALASKA'S ONLY REPRESENTATIVE.

We have TV ads in the can, but need some more dollars to buy air time. If you have any money at all to spare, please send it our way. Diane is everything that we want a progressive Democratic candidate to be...smart, articulate, fair, honest...everything that Don Young isn't.
Please do what you can to help us.

1. What Da Hell Does This Have to do With the Stones?
Or does this congressperson like Mick Jagger? Or does she like to sing "Like A Rolling Stone" in a nasal twang? Please enlighten me.

3. I didn't realize that Rolling Stone magazine has its own congressman...
...and now it appears it has at least three, if Don Young is RSM's third worst congressman. Who are the two Rolling Stone congressmen that are better than Young?

Sounds like the classical definition of fascism, with corporations and government supporting each other.

4. Are you being purposefully dense?
Rolling Stone, which has been publishing lots of excellent progressive articles on politics and election fraud issues, ranked people in Congress. Don Young came out near the bottom of the rankings.

I found the subject line funny.

I also noticed that my first post was very badly punctuated.

Sorry for both the bad punctuation and the humour.

19. That's okay, you're forgiven.
:) I guess I just assumed that everybody here had seen that Rolling Stone article because it's been referenced here a few times over the past week or so. Here's the entry on our boy Don "Mr. Pork" Young, of "Bridges to Nowhere" fame, well known for saying "They can kiss my ear," at the suggestion by other congressmen that he forego the bridge money and direct it toward Katrina reconstruction. He is more than an embarrassment to Alaska - we're tired of the shame he brings to our state.

24. Oh, Intravenous, you just gave me the opportunity to post
this little gem that was published in the Alaska Ear column (political gossip) in the Anchorage Daily News a couple of weeks ago. You'll love this...

INITIAL HERE ... Don Young, Congressman for All Alaskans Except Ear and a Few Others, gave a nice little speech last weekend at the lighting of the pink tree for breast cancer in Town Square. He told the crowd that included a lot of health care professionals how thrilled he was when he finally talked his wife, Lu, into getting her first "monogram."

Lots of Begich (Anchorage's progressive mayor) people were there. Earwigs report that the mayor looked sternly at nearby staff members, warning them silently not to dare laugh. A few lips twitched, some eyes rolled, but no one laughed out loud.

On Friday, at the congressional "listening session" about BP's problems, held at Loussac Library, d'Ear Don wanted to know if it was possible to replace some of the steel pipeline on the slope with pipe made of a less corrosive material. He alluded to having a well at his house on the East Coast that originally had copper pipe, but when the copper wore out, they replaced it with new pipe made out of "PCP."

Hmmm. A PCP pipe. That would explain a lot.

Ear assumes he meant PVC pipe.

Has The Divine Appendage mentioned how much fun it is when Don comes home to campaign?

25. Thanks, Demillo, I actually like Rolling Stone and...
They do have some excellent journalists writing for their mag. I'm a bit giddy tonight, my neighbor has been pounding on my door, standing in front of my patio door window, and yelling for me to come out and fight, all because I threatened to call the fuzz if he didn't shut down this loud party he had the other night. I filed a complaint, and the cops don't seem to care about it, so I hope I don't get murdered by this alcoholic nut case before I make enough replies to start my own thread. This has absolutely nothing to do with Benson in Alaska, but what the hell, typing relieves my nervousness.

7. Rolling Stone has "some" political cred
Edited on Fri Oct-27-06 06:59 PM by OzarkDem
Hey, Jann Wenner used to be a friend of Jackie O's. Is Jann Wenner still around?

Anyway, they've weighed in on issues over the years, but usually only marginal issues like protesting against the Vietnam War, protection of free speech for rock singers, decriminalizing pot, etc. In the late 80's and early 90's they flirted with being "hip" GOP. It sounds like they're finally getting serious.

28. I promise to be serious this time....
But, let me give you a little background. I come from a state where it is very lonely to be a Democrat (Idaho). When I read some of the letters to the editor in Boise's daily newspaper, the Statesman, I don't know whether to laugh or cry. "Liberal" is a dirty word in this state, and the Retards (I mean the Repubs) use this as an epithet when describing the Dems in their campaign ads. Idaho has no Dems in Washington, and only a handfull in the state legislature. The last time Idaho's 2 electoral votes went to a Democratic presidential candidate was when Lyndon Johnson was elected in 1964. Idaho used to have a healthy mix of Dems and Repubs, but with the gradual erosion of the unions, and a heavy influx of retired conservative Californians and Utahns, Idaho has become the reddest of the red states. I even made up a joke about it. Idaho reintroduced wolves into Idaho 7 or eight years ago in our huge primitive area (second only to Alaska's primitive area in size), and the wolves thrived. Anyway, my joke goes like this: There aren't many Dems in elected office because the woves ate most of them. Not very funny, is it? Nobody laughs either when I tell this to my liberal friends (there are still five or six of us left in this state). Anyway, if you want to read a good article about what this state is really like, go to Salon.com and check out the article posted 3-4 days ago titled, "The Reddest County in the Country". Sorry if I sounded flip, but I think my neighbor wants to kill me and I'm trying to relieve the stress. Good Luck with Benson.

11. Benson is the real deal and deserves support, not snark
Can't we focus a little here? If this isn't a time to get serious about the election, when is? C'mon, people. Diane might take this seat, what with revelations about Young's Abramoff et al connections, and the Libertarian candidate in the race having thrown his public support to Benson during the candidates debate.

If the DCCC won't support a gifted candidate like this, then it's up to us.

14. I would donate, but.....
I need to save my money for weed so I can get loaded and try to forget that I live in a police state, thanks to our fearless leader, King Georgie the Second. OK, OK, I'll try to be serious for a minute. Actually, after being a lifelong Democrat, I made the first political donation in my life to John Kerry's campaign a couple years back, even though I was in very bad health and pretty much broke. Kerry didn't seem to appreciate my donation or my letter, since I didn't get so much as an e-mail back asking for more money. So, my usual donation to the Dems is in the form of a vote for them. Sometimes that's the best you can do.

I think maybe this thread is doomed, for your purposes anyway. Tomorrow morning, why not start another thread with the same basic request -- but more info about how great the Democratic candidate is -- and a different subject line. Like something about preserving the Alaskan wilderness.

31. Is that a good position in Alaska?
I mean, much as most of the rest of us might agree with her being against ANWR drilling, I was under the impression that Alaskans overwhelmingly supported it, I assumed due to the jobs and money it would bring to the state. Do I have this all wrong?

32. People are divided, I think...
Edited on Sat Oct-28-06 02:07 AM by Blue_In_AK
Much more emphasis is being put on constructing a natural gas pipeline now. That's all anyone's been talking about for the past couple of years -- what route should be taken, what's the best deal for Alaska's bottom line, trying to avoid being victimized by the big oil companies, tax structures, etc. Really, there's not all that much talk about ANWR these days.

Diane's official position on this is that she is personally opposed to drilling in ANWR, but that she would represent what the majority of Alaskans would want. I imagine that she would be a lot more in touch with "real" Alaskans than Don has been and so would represent us in a more honest way and listen to more opinions. She is pushing hard for renewable energy sources, and I think would be encouraging more development in those areas here. People's attention can be drawn away from drilling in ANWR if alternative economic incentives can be promoted. It's all about the money.

and everybody else who has donated or signed the petition to get DCCC help. We're fighting for our lives here. I can't even begin to convey Don Young's contempt for ordinary Alaskans. Since he's been back here "campaigning," it just becomes more and more evident each day ... such things as refusing to appear in the same venues with Diane, even canceling some appearances when he learned she would be there; the article this morning that shows that almost all of his campaign contributions come from Outside; his calling Alaska largest newspaper (Anchorage Daily News) the "Anchorage Screw You" (as in screw HIM, since they're been quite critical this election season). It's almost like he's sticking his middle finger in all of our faces and saying, "Just TRY to kick me out, Alaskans. I'VE got the money." He just makes me sick.

If you go to the Alaska forum and read some of the newspaper editorials I've posted recently, you'll see what I mean.
