J. Dennis Hastert blows off John Laesch for debate as shit hits the fan
New York Time, WLS News Chicago, WBBM Chicago have the CQ Story and running with it. Hastert was confronted by John for the debate right before the news in Chicago pick up the new story. Hastert is going down. John will close the gap with this story coming out. Yes Hastert from a red district but Republicans are working with John to beat Hastert. Here is the CQ Story

If anyone wants to help John he still can use cash here that link

Edited on Sun Oct-29-06 08:41 PM by Jack Rabbit
After the Foley scandal, the fact that the Abramoff scandals took place under his nose (whether he was personally involved or not is irrelavent) and there ugly stories about suitcases full of herion cash all mean Hastert richly deserves to go down.

I don't know if Laesch will last more than one term in that seat, but any district deserves better than Hastert.

25. Wow - you certainly aren't kidding about Laesch's bio...
He hasn't single-handedly discovered the cure for cancer yet, but other than that...

From his website:

John Laesch was born on January 29th, 1974. The Laesch family served as Christian Missionaries, and John spent much of his childhood on the mission field in West Africa.

In 1986, the Laesch family returned to the United States and settled on a small farm in Newark, Illinois. During high school, John worked in the fields of several family-owned farms across Kendall County. John was captain of the soccer team and graduated at the top of his class from Newark High School in 1992. John received an A.S. from Waubonsee Community College in 1999.

Driven by his desire to serve his country, John enlisted in the United States Navy in 1995. In 1996, Laesch graduated from Great Lakes Naval Training Center at the top of his class.

Petty Officer Laesch receiving one of numerous commendations Throughout his tour of duty, Laesch served as an intelligence analyst in Bahrain, monitoring terrorist activity and analyzing foreign political and military structures. For his outstanding service to our nation, John received numerous citations and meritoriously rose 5 ranks within 3 short years.

Following an honorable discharge from the military, Laesch attended Illinois State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in History, while pursuing minors in Political Science and Communications.

Laesch’s desire to create positive change for the nation led him to become involved in political affairs. John volunteered for numerous political campaigns, and took on higher leadership roles in each subsequent campaign. In 2004, Laesch served as the campaign manager for Dr. David Gill in the Illinois 15th Congressional District.

John’s commitment to truth and Democracy has led him to challenge the current Speaker of the House, J. Dennis Hastert in the 2006 election.

John is currently employed as a carpenter, and in his free time, he enjoys biking, fishing, and working on the family farm.

27. You should talk to him
I was with John when there was little hope of winning. I been in the political game for a very long time . He is a cross of BOBBY K. AND WELLSTONE. This vet is the real deal. Remember his brother in Iraq asked him to run against Hastert. If he does this it will be the biggest upset of the 06 run. I know with the new story John will jump about five points.

28. I only met John once
at a town hall meeting. I was very impressed. He has it together. He is not a "slick" speechmaker - he was going thru powerpoint slides telling his views on Iraq - very conversational, casual even.

I chatted with him briefly afterwards - he's a sincere, patriotic American who believed his high school civics lessons and said "ok, I'll tackle it".

I am sure if he wins he'll be overwhelmed at first, but he'll handle it. He clearly is not one to worry about "keeping up with the Jonses" - getting sucked into the DC cocktail circuit, lobbyist merry-go-round, etc. He'll just tackle the job, refer back to that civics book, and work to set things right. We need about 535 of him!

31. Are mailers going out with these stories and pictures on them?
If I lived in the area I would sit in front of a grocery store and hand them out.

It is so late in the game but I wish his name had been submitted as a candidate for endorsement at the WesPAC site. There is a place for that over at http://securingamerica.com. General Clark has a soft spot for Vets with integrity and that sounds like John, Perhaps a quick radio ad could be done. The General writes the endorsements and offers his voice. Red states and "red regions in blue states" seem to appreciate four star Generals.

Maybe Hastert will be forced to resign and the Illinois Governor will then appoint John. (I hope your governor is a Democrat)

Well, I am talking off the top of my head now. Better go to bed.....I will send another donation tomorrow.

32. I don't think the governor appoints in that case.
If I rememberer correctly and I am not sure if I do,the county party chairs or the county board chairs get to do that if a candidate is gone before his or her term is up. If my memory is correct that is how Hastert first got into office was by appointment.

40. It's often ALMOST like an appointment, but not quite
IIRC, according to the US Constitution, any vacant seat in the House must remain vacant until a general or special election fills it. By contrast, the Governor can appoint an interim Senator to fill a vacancy.

This doesn't make much sense to me, since on average an unexpired Senate term would last three times as long as an unexpired House term, but that's what the Constitution says.

If the Governor is of the same party as the departed House member, usually a special election will be set at a time designed to keep voter turnout to a minimum. Getting slated for a gerrymandered, safe seat in a special election is ALMOST as sure a bet as an appointment.

If the Governor is of the opposite party, it may make much more sense to keep a seat vacant until the next General Election, rather than have a pre-existing gerrymander give a special election to the opposition.

34. IMO what Laesch needs is a Hastert stand-in wearing a chicken suit,
Edited on Mon Oct-30-06 12:16 AM by ProgressiveEconomist
for a debate rescheduled for early next week! If Hastert shows, fine. Otherwise, turn it into a photo-op for Laesch's last week of ads.

IMO Laesch should invite all the local and Chicago press, have some really funny lines for the stand-in to read, and should make sure the chicken suit is bright yellow and has room to be stuffed with about two dozen pillows! Of course, the whole event should be digitally-taped for John''s website and for YouTube!

41. I just voted for Laesch!! Hoo Ha!
Damn, they keep messing with the boundaries! I thought I was 100 yards inside Hyde's district; turns out I'm in Hasterts! So the Laesch signs in my front yard are pertinent after all!

The district maps show me in the 6th, but they gave me a ballot for 14th. I questioned it and they insisted it was right based on address. So Laesch got my vote; Tammy didn't. I have to admit in past elections, when the congressional choice was between Hyde and (no candidate) or Hastert and (no candidate), I didn't pay close attention to the gerrymandering, and which one I was going to not vote for. I guess I got shifted when they changed the polling place last election.

Told about trying to ask Hastert to debate, not even being able to get his attention. They were both in the Pumpkin Festival parade this weekend. Hastert as usual riding in a fire truck. So Laesch and his followers carrying Laesch signs walked along beside/behind the truck. He said they drew cheers the whole way. he also said a lot of Hastert yard signs are now marked with an "x"
