they seem to work differently than we do. they don't have "up and comers" like
bill clinton (was) or john edwards and barack obama. they tend to give their
nomination to whoever came in second last time. I'm not sure that is a successful
strategy over the long haul (just look at what a horrible candidate bob dole turned
out to be), but it is what they seem to do. also, their party apparatus seems to
much more influence than ours, and you will never see them nominate a grass roots
candidate. it just wouldn't ever happen. they tend to anoint their candidate.

so, they should nominate john mccain in 08.

There really aren't many. All those who were up through 2004 are now on the fast track to jail.

I wouldn't call Harold Ford a rising star in the Democratic party. I think he's going to meet his ceiling fairly quickly. I'm not saying he won't win the Senate race, but I think that's as far as he'll go. He plays the political game and his words are scripted. I like him, but I can tell you those are the comments from especially the Midwest. Many don't trust him.

Obama is more popular in the Midwest and is probably a rising star, though I personally think he's a lot of talk and a political game player along the lines of Kerry. (I know, I'll get shot for this one, but I won't lie).

Duncan Hunter of California just announced that he's interested in the nation's top job today. Evidently he's a good fundraiser and might be a factor.

I think Kay Bailey Hutchison wants to be president. I pray to the entire pantheon of gods and goddesses that she not be.

I think Rick Santorum was interested in the job but it appears he's coming down with the "I got my ass kicked but good" blues.

And I'm sure there are other GOP up-and-comers, but their field isn't much compared with ours. We have the all-stars, one after the other.

McClintock is a possibility only if he wins CA Lt.Gov. on Tuesday, giving him a stepping-stone to run for Governor in 2010.

Watch for Congressman Steve King to run for the Harkin or Grassley seats, when either of them retire.

Look for Mark Kirk or Tim Johnson to run for Governor in Illinois in 2010, especially if Blagojevich's approval ratings disintegrate.

Saxton could be going places, if he defeats Kulongoski.

Watch out for Terri Lynn Land and Candice Miller in Michigan. The Dems will need a strong open-seat candidate is Levin retires in '08, or when Granholm is term-limited out of gubernatorial reelection in '10.

Dino Rossi will probably give Gregoire rematch headaches again in Washington state.

John Sununu could be a dark horse sometime down the road.

In Tennessee, Lamar Alexander could become a "senator for life" if Rosalind Kurita doesn't defeat him in '08.
