Just a thought -- are there any "rising stars" in the GOP?
We have Spitzer, Obama, Ford, Deval Patrick in Massachusetts, Villaraigosa in L.A. -- and surely more from an incoming Congressional class. Let's not debate the merits of these candidates, but name some others.

And can you think of any rising stars among Republicans?

3. Heather Wilson (R-COW)
unfondly known as "Halliburton Heather" here in NM.

I sincerely hope we're going to throw her bony ass out of Congress this time. Her last few elections were either squeakers or (in 2004) brazenly stolen.

She's been on the neocon fast track since she got into office on the coattails of a truly moderate pubbie, Steve Schiff.

I've finally seen a few yard signs for the weaselette, but they seem to be outnumbered by at least 50 to 1. I do hope we'll be able to do the country a favor and get her out and packed off to some K Street pimpery representing the military industrial complex.

7. anytime you beat your opposition's senate leader

your star will be considered to be on the rise. but let's face it, (and not
to denigrate the place) we are talking about south dakota. and he lost before
he managed to beat daschle. and he waged the most expensive campaign in SD history
to do it. and, as I recall, there were shenanigans with the vote counting.

14. rethugs don't have rising stars, as such.

they seem to work differently than we do. they don't have "up and comers" like
bill clinton (was) or john edwards and barack obama. they tend to give their
nomination to whoever came in second last time. I'm not sure that is a successful
strategy over the long haul (just look at what a horrible candidate bob dole turned
out to be), but it is what they seem to do. also, their party apparatus seems to
much more influence than ours, and you will never see them nominate a grass roots
candidate. it just wouldn't ever happen. they tend to anoint their candidate.

so, they should nominate john mccain in 08.

31. I hope not. I guess Jeb married some Columbian lady, so
George P. is supposed to be the dream candidate because he's a Bush/he's hispanic. :banghead:

They also have these wacky ideas about putting Jeb out there to run for Pres.

Either way, I have a dream...where we elect someone other than a Clinton or a Bush. I'm just sick of the whole lot of them.

40. Her name is Columba and she was born in Mexico.
Her sister is married to a republican party official-type guy named John Schmitz. And this John Schmitz is the brother of... Mary Kay LeTourneau. (Don't ask!)

Columba distinguished herself by getting in trouble at Customs when she tried to sneak stuff in duty-free--stuff that wasn't, er, duty-free.

And who could forget Jeb and Columba's daughter Noelle, the one who has the serious drug abuse problem? Or their handsome son, George P. Bush, who stalked his ex-girlfriend?

A distinguished family, to be sure.

42. Er, I think there was a slight snarl in that plan...
... especially considering that Prince George P. Bush was arrested for burglary and criminal mischief in 1994...

Oh, well, OTOH, why not? "President Creep". I guess it's as good as "President Moron".

"On January 29, the eve of the State of the Union address by George W. Bush, a girl was arrested for fraud. In this particular instance, she impersonated a physician to prescribe herself narcotics. This "girl" was twenty-four year old Noelle Bush, one of three children of Governor Jeb Bush of Florida. We thought that it might have been an isolated incident, but it would appear that the Florida Bushes have a number of issues with law enforcement.

It would seem that Noelle was also arrested in Flagstaff, Arizona for shoplifting in 1995. Her brother, George P. Bush, was busted for burglary and criminal mischief in 1994, and her other brother, Jeb Jr., was cited for sexual misconduct on October 2, 2000, in a shopping center parking lot. Knowing that the apples don't fall far from the tree, we must look to the parents of these wayward children.

Their mother, Columba Gallo Bush, was fined for smuggling clothing and jewelry into the United States after a $19,000 Parisian shopping spree. A cursory search on Jeb Bush showed that marital fidelity was not his strong suit. Seems that he really really liked a lady named Cynthia Henderson. They were the talk of the town after several of Florida's major newspapers broke the story.

A lack of "family values" is not, however, limited to the Bush clan in Florida. Last year, there were twin troubles in Texas. Jenna Bush had her day in court on May 16 for underage possession of alcohol. Experimentation with alcohol netted her eight hours of community service and 6 hours of anti-drinking lectures. Being lightly tapped on the shoulder did not appear to deter Jenna. On May 29 (a mere eight days later), Jenna and her twin sister, Barbara, were arrested for attempting to purchase alcohol and possession of fraudulent identification."

69. That's who I was about to name...
There really aren't many. All those who were up through 2004 are now on the fast track to jail.

I wouldn't call Harold Ford a rising star in the Democratic party. I think he's going to meet his ceiling fairly quickly. I'm not saying he won't win the Senate race, but I think that's as far as he'll go. He plays the political game and his words are scripted. I like him, but I can tell you those are the comments from especially the Midwest. Many don't trust him.

Obama is more popular in the Midwest and is probably a rising star, though I personally think he's a lot of talk and a political game player along the lines of Kerry. (I know, I'll get shot for this one, but I won't lie).

55. I hate to think about Republicans at all, but they do have a few
names worth watching.

Rob Portman, from Ohio, is a potent and electable potential candidate. He could make it onto the GOP ticket as veep choice as early as 2008.

Duncan Hunter of California just announced that he's interested in the nation's top job today. Evidently he's a good fundraiser and might be a factor.

I think Kay Bailey Hutchison wants to be president. I pray to the entire pantheon of gods and goddesses that she not be.

I think Rick Santorum was interested in the job but it appears he's coming down with the "I got my ass kicked but good" blues.

And I'm sure there are other GOP up-and-comers, but their field isn't much compared with ours. We have the all-stars, one after the other.

And we're going to win the White Houe in 2008.

I hope we will defeat him on Tuesday, but we shouldn't overlook Tim Pawlenty. He has the look of a man-child and for some reason, he is able to disguise his horrible policies as "moderate" even through they are far from that.

I have a feeling that Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin is being groomed for bigger things. I see his floor speeches on the Lehrer News Hour all the time. I don't know if they are rising stars, per se, but we should defiantly keep our eyes on them.

65. Satan?
Satan has been making inroads lately. Quite popular with Republicans.

68. Chuck Hagel, maybe?
He might actually have a chance, since the Iraq war is unpopular even with a lot of Republicans now, and he has been critical of the war for awhile. Like most Republicans he has other problems (like his relationship with a voting machine company), but he has military creds and doesn't seem as spectacularly stupid as some of the others. He might be a tougher opponent than, say, Allen or Frist.

72. Lindsey Graham, Tom McClintock, Steve King
Graham has already begun grooming himself in the U.S. Senate.

McClintock is a possibility only if he wins CA Lt.Gov. on Tuesday, giving him a stepping-stone to run for Governor in 2010.

Watch for Congressman Steve King to run for the Harkin or Grassley seats, when either of them retire.

Look for Mark Kirk or Tim Johnson to run for Governor in Illinois in 2010, especially if Blagojevich's approval ratings disintegrate.

Saxton could be going places, if he defeats Kulongoski.

Watch out for Terri Lynn Land and Candice Miller in Michigan. The Dems will need a strong open-seat candidate is Levin retires in '08, or when Granholm is term-limited out of gubernatorial reelection in '10.

Dino Rossi will probably give Gregoire rematch headaches again in Washington state.

John Sununu could be a dark horse sometime down the road.

In Tennessee, Lamar Alexander could become a "senator for life" if Rosalind Kurita doesn't defeat him in '08.

74. Is there a possibility Bredesen will take on Alexander?
No offense to Kurita, who I'm sure would make a great Senator, but from the Governor's mansion he'd have a much better shot at launching a challenge to Alexander.

Besides is Kurita even planning on running?

82. I'm sure Kurita is considering it
Bredesen is going to have his hands full with his second term. Besides, it might be better to keep Bredesen as an option in the wings for 2012, in the event that Corker beats Ford.

Kurita won't win.

85. Why do you say that?
I think Kurita would be a much cleaner candidate than Ford, and that's what the Dems will need in '08 (especially if the prez nomination process goes the way I think it will).
