HELENA - Gov. Brian Schweitzer says lawmakers and other elected officials becoming lobbyists soon after they leave government employment "doesn't smell right."

It's why he pushed support for Initiative 153, which would make elected officials and others in state government who leave office wait two years before they can become lobbyists.

But a lobbyist who used to be a state representative says the initiative is not necessary.

"I don't think I can cite one example where there has been a problem," said Ron Devlin, a lobbyist for NorthWestern Energy and who served in the state House from 2001 to 2003.

It appears that more people in the state agree with Schweitzer, however. An October poll conducted by the Montana State University-Billings political science department found that 71 percent of registered voters favored the initiative. Eighteen percent were against it, and 11 percent were undecided.
