... As part of the planning, the departing governor, Mitt Romney, will leave the State House in the centuries-old "lone walk" the night before the inauguration, which officials say is the first time in history,
to avoid an awkward public departure in front of thousands of Patrick supporters. For generations, the exiting governor has met the incoming governor on inauguration day.
The tradition has included turning over symbols of the office that include a pewter key and a set of the 1860 Massachusetts General Laws. After the transfer of the items, the Senate sergeant of arms escorts the new governor to the House chamber, where he is sworn in by the Senate president.
The departing governor then traditionally walks out the front door of the State House and down the 31 steps, usually to a waiting crowd.(snip)
This year, Romney will turn over the gifts and leave the building on Jan. 3, a day before his term officially ends.

http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2006/12/21/romney_to_miss_patrick_inaugural/ I guess he's worried the outpouring of gratitude and affection from the people of Massachusetts would just be too overwhelming. Modest fella that he is, naturally, he wants to avoid such an emotional and sentimental scene.
Goodbye, dear Mittens! Such fond memories we shall ever cherish -- the perfect teeth, the Ken-doll hair... the ease with which you lie about where you stand on major issues. The way you'll say anything to collect another vote or two. Your grace and charm as you traveled around the country bad-mouthing Massachusetts (the state you were supposed to be representing as Governor, remember?).
Oh, we'll miss you. But we'll take comfort knowing you are in the gentle arms of the national GOP now, gazing deeply, passionately into to each others' eyes while stabbing each other in the back. Posturing and preening one day, pecking each others' flesh away the next. We'll take some comfort in that, dear Mittens. You'll be in the company you deserve now. And you'll still be good for plenty of laughs.
