I know one thing: Bush is not a true conservative, or a symbol of what the Republican Party of old was.

The Republican Party has been hijacked by "social conservatives" (with everything that label implies) and "neo-cons". With the exception of Hagel, Specter, Giuliani and the Gov. of Florida, Mr. Crist, I can't find many Republicans of today I like.

I have a lot of sympathy for Eisenhower, Goldwater... and even for Mr. Nixon and Mr. Ford (especially for Ford). One might disagree with several or many of their views, but they were not what Republicans of today are. They seemed to be very reasonable individuals, ideologically speaking.

The party has morphed - Reagan with his charisma - started the move rightward - and bushco ran far, far to the radical right.

If you haven't already, read John Dean's "Conservatives without Conscience" - when he describes how he first began to delve into the project - it started with/from conversations with Goldwater. John Dean, to me, symbolizes the old-time republican - though he has in recent years identified himself as an independent. His latest book is such an informative (per perspective) book - a must read; esp for those wondering the how did the republican party become what it is today?
