Harley-Davidson Locks Out Workers Who Rejected Concessions

By Doug Cunningham

Harley-Davidson workers in York, Pennsylvania are on the picket lines today after being locked out by management. International Association of Machinists District 98 says more than 96 percent of the workers rejected health care, wage and pension concessions. But instead of continuing to bargain the company has locked the workers out.

: "It's another situation of corporate greed. The company made a billion dollars last year. The people at Harley-Davidson York Pennsylvania are one of their biggest assets for this company and they make them a lot of money. And there are big stock options afforded to the executives of the company. And it just seems like a shame to me that we can't sit down and work out our problems."

2. We could handle the health care issue if we passed single-payer health care
Pensions and wages are a union issue though. I'd rather stand with the union than Mr. CEO.

at 1/3 the price.

They should "concede" some of their outrageous prices to their employees.

"Harley-Davidson Asks Import Curb
AP
Published: December 1, 1982

The last United States motorcycle maker, Harley-Davidson, is asking the Government for protection from Japanese competition that it says threatens to drive it out of business. It said it has laid off 40 percent of its work force because of losses for which it blames Japanese competition.

Vaughn Beals, Harley's chairman, is asking President Reagan to impose a special five-year tariff on imports that would raise the price of heavyweight motorcycles to American buyers and make it easier for his company to compete."

10. The people who are H-D's biggest assets are the ones who have bought into
the dubious mystique of this overpriced, underengineered, noisy machine.

11. I bought into it.
Still got my '93 Sportster. Even I look good sitting on that bike. And noisy? Not quite noisy enough until I put drag pipes on, first thing after I brought her home brand new. Sometimes I start her up just to listen to her purr.

12. Purr?
That's not how I'd describe the obnoxious racket that plagues us all summer along the Coast Highway. Normal traffic, including well-tuned and muffled motorcycles, doesn't overwhelm the sound of the ocean at our house. But a pack of Harleys means you have to pay attention to them and only them, at least until they've moved on to annoy the people up the road.

15. Yep, on both counts.
Sounds the best at idle, just like you described. Highly distinctive.

Corporate America wants to push unions off a cliff once and for all, and HD is no different in that respect. Too bad that John Q. Citizen has little sympathy. We'll all pay for it.
