Yes, the Weekly World News is now officially a credible news source. Now before you think I have gone insane consider the material that counts as credible news these days.
It was not the Weekly World News that told us that Iraq had Weapons of Mass Destruction. They never reported that Saddam Hussein had ties to Al Qaida, they never reported that global warming was disputed, they never told us that George Bush was spreading democracy to Iraq, they never told us that Bush was legitimately elected, they never told us electronic voting machines were safe, and they never told us that the staged toppling of the Saddam statue in Baghdad by a tiny group of actors was a major turning point. If Fox News, CNN, ABC, NBC, and CBS are all still considered to be credible after all the lies they told and the propaganda they spread then we should say the Weekly World News is credible as well because obviously the word credibility doesn’t mean much any more.
Sure the Weekly World News may have made a lot of crap up, but at least their fake news didn’t kill anyone. The corporate media’s lies about WMDs did kill, they killed hundreds of thousands. And now their lies are again threatening the lives of us all by claiming that hard scientific facts on the global warming are somehow debatable. They lie about such a crucial issue, just hoping we won’t notice that they are taking in hundreds of millions of dollars in ad revenue from the auto industry which is trying to sell more SUVs and does not want us to think about global warming. And yet we are supposed to consider them credible.
Well if I am going to consider them credible then I am going to consider the Weekly World News credible as well. After all Batboy seems a hell of a lot more real to me then that heroic and noble hero George Bush guy they told us existed at the start of the Iraq War.
If I am going to be lied to about anything I would rather be lied to about an alligator lady than I would be lied to about a war which resulted in massive casualties. If you are going to lie to me about an Earth threatening scenario then lie to me about aliens taking over the planet, but don’t you dare lie to me about the very real threat of global warming.
So yes, the Weekly World News is now a credible news source despite the fact that they did absolutely nothing to become more credible. Their competition's credibility has just sunk so low, that even the most absurd looks reasonable by comparison. How far our standards have sunk.
