Delay Pays More than $450,000 In Legal Expenses

(February 1, 2007)--Republican Tom DeLay's congressional committee reports paying more than $454,000 for legal expenses in the last quarter of 2006.

Details come from PoliticalMoneyLine, a Web site that tracks campaign fund-raising and spending.

The embattled former US House majority leader quit Congress in June.

The Houston-area lawmaker faces charges in Austin as part of an investigation into the allegedly illegal use of funds for state legislative races.

DeLay has denied the allegations.

Mr. DeLay only made, what, $150,000 to $160,000 a year as a Congressman? That would be like someone making, say, $50,000 a year laying out $150,000 to his or her attorney. I know that would strap me! I wonder where Mr. DeLay got the money to pay his attorneys? Surely he wouldn't accept money from contributors to campaign, and then turn around and spend it on something else entirely? That would be dishonest!
