Presidential Candidates Pick Tunes at DNC Meeting
AP: Candidates Pick Tunes at DNC Meeting
Feb 2
By NEDRA PICKLER

WASHINGTON (AP) - Everyone needs a soundtrack - even politicians.

The presidential candidates who addressed the Democratic National Committee's winter meeting Friday got to choose their tunes, and it was an eclectic mix that reflected personal favorites and not-so-subtle messages.

Some candidates requested two songs, one that blared as they approached the stage and another that played as they left the podium.

The selections:

_John Edwards: "This Is Our Country" by John Mellencamp.

_Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut: "Get Ready (Cause Here I Come)" by the Temptations and "Reach Out," also by the Temptations.

_Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York: "Right Here, Right Now," by Jesus Jones and "Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" by Bachman-Turner Overdrive.

_Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio: "America the Beautiful"

Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois decided against using any music in keeping with the somber tone he sought to convey. Wesley Clark, who hasn't indicated whether he will run, entered to Johnny Cash's "I Won't Back Down."

1. There ain't no easy way out...
Artist/Band: Cash Johnny
Lyrics for Song: I Won't Back Down
Lyrics for Album: American 3: Solitary Man

Well I won't back down, no I won't back down
You can stand me up at the gates of hell
But I won't back down

Verse 2
Gonna stand my ground, won't be turned around
And I'll keep this world from draggin' me down
Gonna stand my ground and I won't back down

Chorus
Hey baby, there ain't no easy way out
Hey I will stand my ground and I won't back down

Verse 3
Well I know what's right, I got just one life
In a world that keeps on pushin' me around
But I stand my ground and I won't back down

Chorus
Hey baby, there ain't no easy way out
Hey I will stand my ground and I won't back down
No I won't back down.

6. Who was the first to record this?
Cash or Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

It's one of my favorites no matter who records it.

26. Tom Petty is great, but I liked the Cash cover better
Cash's version sounds like it was written for him to sing (though I know Petty wrote it)

Maybe it's something about the quality of Cash's voice. Like he's been there, and done that....

Wes couldn't have picked a better song.

2. Obama's should have been Hit me with your Best Shot.
He was answering his critics in this speech as a sub message. All the people slamming him. He really did it well.
It was not geared as a DNC speech but, answering those who have trashed him. If you get a chance to see it again, listen to it.

it's hard to beat the system
when we're standing at a distance
so we keep waiting
waiting on the world to change

now if we had the power
to bring our neighbors home from war
they would have never missed a Christmas
no more ribbons on their door

and when you trust your television
what you get is what you got
cause when they own the information, oh
they can bend it all they want

<chorus>

one day our generation
is gonna rule the population
so we keep on waiting
waiting on the world to change

<chorus>

it's not that we don't care,
we just know that the fight ain't fair
so we keep on waiting
waiting on the world to change

14. And Dick Cheney picked his: Genocide by Judas Priest
Mercenary batalions
Are poised to strike us down
Terminations conquest
Upon us now full grown

Save me, my heart's open wide
Help me, no question of pride
Save me, my people have died
Total genocide

Devastation hungers
She waits to leap to earth
Imminent liquidation
Before the grand rebirth

Save me, my heart's open wide
Help me, no question of pride
Save me, my people have died
Total genocide

Sin after sin I have endured
Yet the wounds I bear are the wounds of love

Frantic mindless zombies
Grab at fleeting time
Lost in cold perplexion
Waiting for the sign

Generations tremble
Clinging face to face
Helpless situation
To end the perfect race

Flashing senseless sabers
Cut us to the ground
Eager for the life blood
Of all who can be found

Save me, my heart's open wide
Help me, no question of pride
Save me, my people have died
Total genocide

Slice to the left, slice to the right
None to retaliate, none will fight
Chopping at the hearts, snuffing out the lives
This race departs, no one will survive
Heads to the feet, feet to the air
Souls in the soil, heavy in despair
End of all ends, body into dust
To greet death friends, extinction is a must

15. Wesley's is the best.
Good night Edwards. Edwards is going to annoy the hell out of so many people with that "This Our Country" song. Being a football fan I've had to listen to the conservative grabbing crap song for 6 months during the commericals. I'm not alone either.

17. Mellencamp is a liberal
There's a good interview in Vanity Fair this month. To sum it up, he says Chevy gave him better promotion than the music industry. He's an unabashed liberal, spoke out against the war early on, supported Kerry in 2004 - and has suffered in the industry because of it. Just because someone can relate to the entire country, it doesn't make them a conservative.

24. He played on that rock the vote tour or whatever it was called...
in support of the Kerry/Edwards ticket. I saw the show in PA. He said that he doesn't much talk about politicis onstage but he was angry enough that he felt he had to now...

It was a very good show, BTW...and I've always liked him from back in the day when he was John Cougar.

Great point. He's been writing political statements for years...I remember his '87 song Down and Out in Paradise where each verse started out with "Dear Mr. President..."

Good stuff.

20. And you're not just talkin' out yer ass either! Just look at this
Edited on Sat Feb-03-07 09:21 AM by Boo Boo
knuckle-dragging conservative rant the Mellencamps wrote back in '03:

http://www.commondreams.org/views03/1022-13.htm

Sickening, isn't it. Don't even get me started on Our Country; utterly disgusting. When he sang that song on Fox before game two of the World Series I just had to leave the room. All those morons in the crowd sitting there singing along... Christ, just look at these lyrics!

Well, I can stand beside ideas I think are right
And I can stand beside the idea to stand and fight
I do believe there’s a dream for everyone
This is our country

There's room enough here for science to live
And there's room enough here for religion to forgive
And try to understand other people of this land
This is our country

From the east coast to the west coast
Down the Dixie Highway
Back home
This is our country

And poverty could be just another ugly thing
And bigotry would be seen only as obscene
And the ones that run this land
Help the poor and common man
This is our country

From the east coast to the west coast
Down the Dixie Highway
Back home
This is our country

The dream is still alive
Some day it will come true
And this country
It belongs to folks like me and you
So let the voice of freedom
Sing out through this land
This is our country

From the east coast to the west coast
Down the Dixie Highway
Back home
This is our country

From the east coast to the west coast
Down the Dixie Highway
Back home
This is our country

I believe that Jim Webb used this song as well in his campaign.
