Biden apologies, again, to Democrats
WASHINGTON -- Democrats attending their party's annual winter meeting here today were uncertain whether Sen. Joe Biden's presidential campaign would be hurt by remarks he made recently about his rivals.

The Delaware Democrat has been apologizing all week for a New York Observer story in which he described fellow presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama as the “first mainstream African American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.”'

His first words at the podium of the Democratic National Committee's winter meeting were: “So, how was your week?”

On Saturday, Biden gave another apology before turning to the issue that was fueling the most discussion over two days of meetings, the Iraq war.

3. Enough already.
It must be about time for a Sunday morning talk show. TIme for your close-up, Senator.

5. In Biden's defense, I'd just say that apologizing is nearly a lost art
in politics, especially Republican politics. Biden's words were not his best and he'd likely prefer to have them back. They're on the record and all over the world wide web by now, but he has apologized, and seems sincere about it.

A responsible press would be far more assertive in asking Richard Perle why he hasn't apologized. Or Donald Rumsfeld. Or George "Slam Dunk" Tenet. And on down the line. General Powell. Cheney. Rice. You know the list of names.

Aren't larger, more urgent, more-to-the-point apologies owed by the Republicans who lied us into Iraq? The Biden gaffe was clumsy but the Iraq war has been calamitous.

I no longer expect most of the press to demand accountability from Bush and Cheney and their war Cabinet, but before Joe Biden is hung and quartered, I believe others have a great deal more to answer for than he does.
