You think corporate news is bad? You want real news? Here's one of the best!
And here's a chance to support it, by pre-ordering Nancy Davies' book on the democratic revolt in Oaxaca, Mexico, "The People Decide."

Nancy Davies and NarcoNews are CREATING what we all want: a free press!

And, in southern Mexican these days, with the escalating war of the rich against the very poor, that is not safe. Indy media photographer Brad Will was shot dead on the street in Oaxaca a short time ago--filming his assailants as he died (paramilitary thugs of the fascist governor). Hundreds of Oaxacan citizens have been killed, tortured, kidnapped, raped--teachers, union organizers, community elders. Davies has reported it all, on the ground in Oaxaca--in a brilliant chronicling of the awesome democracy movement that was born there in June 2005. Davies and NarcoNews is where I went for news of that movement, which could be found nowhere else.

Now I'm going to throw a DU shit-fit. WHY IS THERE ONLY ONE RECOMMENDATION OF THIS THREAD? Do we want a free press or not? Do we want a responsible press or not? Do we want news of real people who are revolutionizing their communities, and their countries, or Hollywood gossip and "packaged" war?

If you want a free press, a responsible press, and news of real life revolutionaries, YOU'VE GOT TO SUPPORT IT! Send $20 NOW for publication costs! --and you will get the book when it comes out.

You will weep and you will rage, when you read this book, and you will cheer the people of Oaxaca--and, believe me, they will cheer you up. Their peaceful, democratic, leftist (majorityist) revolution is happening all over Latin America--Bolivia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Nicaragua (where leftist governments have been elected) and also in Peru, Paraguay and Mexico (where big leftist movements will likely bear fruit in the next election cycle), and even in Guatemala. Virtually the entire southern hemisphere has gone "blue" while we're still struggling just to get a half-decent Congress. The Latin Americans are showing us the way.

1. Transparent elections.
2. Grass roots organization.
3. Think big.

Buy Davies' book now, if you want to understand the future of this hemisphere. As Evo Morales, the first indigenous president of Bolivia has said: "The time of the people has come."

6. About a country which is not going leftist:
Edited on Sat Feb-03-07 10:35 PM by The Backlash Cometh
There is a latin American country which is also showing the way, but in a capitalist direction. Where it will end, however, is probably not going to be as good for the poor as the leftist countries.

First the background: I have a relative who is an ex-Walmart manager who decided to become a libertarian style entrepreneur and just started buying land in a country, like Costa Rica, where the real estate turnover appeared to be profitable on paper. So, with his Walmart manager background, he went to the country and proceeded to hire locals and develop land. I will never be able to duplicate the arrogance in his manner as he filled me with the details of his exploits. He sees this country as a new frontier and HE'S going to bring prosperity to the land by teaching locals to work hard for good tips. I've kept my mouth shut for the last few years, but this last time I saw him, I lost it.

He told me that at his hotel, which is very exclusive, there was one time when he was not waited on so he made a stink about it. He said the waiters were socializing with their friends, instead of waiting on him. He was wearing a tee-shirt, shorts and sandals. So, he raises a stink, they offer to pick up his hotel tab, and he, with his American kindness (sarcasm) said he wasn't looking for a freebie, but instead, wanted to teach them something about working hard for tips. He actually went on with his story without realizing how condescending he sounded. He told these people that if they took care of the customer, the customer would reward them with $4.00 tips. I lost it about that time.

I said, you've been there for two or three years and you think you're going to teach these people about working hard for tips? First let me tell you, though you may know these people for two or three years, they've known people like you since 1903. You walk in with a tee-shirt, shorts and sandals and they don't wait on you. Don't you see, they've already sized you up. People don't go into these countries with the intention of trying to wipe out poverty by putting them to work. The foreigners come TO USE the cheap labor, NOT TO END IT. But it's not personal, it's not just the foreigners who exploit them; the upper class of their own country don't want them to improve themselves either. The working class of that country have seen American visitors like you for generations, and the local Americans who live there are not known to be big tippers. So they have their own set of rules and their own ways of getting back at you and the fact that they didn't wait on you was their way of letting you know how they felt about you and the meager tips they've grown accustom to getting.

We proceeded to talk about "their own set of rules" and that led to talking about the rampant graft that exists in the country and how anybody could be bought in that country. I told him that it was a country that has had a lot of foreign interference and everybody comes in flashing money to buy them off. He got cocky and said, "It's the rich who are selling out their own country!" And I finally found my moment. The one I had been waiting for six years to turn on this freeper relative and I replied, "The exact same thing is happening in the U.S., but the American wealthy class is much more clever about hiding their dirty work; what do you think privatization is all about? Do you have any idea how much public land, alone, we've lost in the last six years?"

I think a light bulb went off in his head and I look forward to next year's Thanksgiving Dinner, because I think he's ready for some more illumination.
