Right-wing Catholic group slams Edwards for hiring pro-gay bloggers

Edwards slammed for hiring pro-gay bloggers
Associated Press
Tuesday, February 6, 2007

----
Two bloggers hired recently by Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards were criticized Tuesday by a Catholic group for posts they had written elsewhere on the Internet.
Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, demanded that Edwards fire Amanda Marcotte and Melissa McEwan.
"John Edwards is a decent man who has had his campaign tarnished by two anti-Catholic, vulgar, trash-talking bigots," Donohue wrote in a statement. "He has no choice but to fire them immediately."
The Edwards campaign declined to comment. McEwan and Marcotte did not respond to e-mails requesting a response.
Donohue cited posts that the women made on blogs in the past several months in which they criticized the pope and the church for its opposition to homosexuality, abortion and contraception, sometimes using profanity.
"The Catholic church is not about to let something like compassion for girls get in the way of using the state as an instrument to force women to bear more tithing Catholics," Marcotte wrote on the blog Pandagon on Dec. 26, in an excerpt cited by Donohue.
Among the McEwan posts that Donohue listed was one she posted on Feb. 21, 2006, on her site, Shakespeare's Sister. She questioned what religious conservatives don't understand about "keeping your noses out of our britches, our beds and our families?"
Edwards put both bloggers on his payroll last week as part of his outreach to liberal voters and activists on the Internet. Their decision to work for Edwards is part of a broader move among prominent bloggers to jobs with political campaigns and progressive organizations.

2. John Edwards is not seeking to head the Catholic Church, so far as I
know.

I believe he seeks a job in the public sector.

There are in fact lesbians and gays IN the public sector.

He's well within rights and doing the right thing all at once.

The spokespersons railing against him over this might have spent the time and energy praising his work for the underprivileged, which the charitable arm of the Church also excels at. It would have been a point of common concern and accomplishment. Instead they dropped the ball by howling about lesbians.

8. A word of caution to DUers about Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League
I am not Catholic, but I do know a little about Mr. Donohue and "his" Catholic League. They are a fringe group that always gets called by the MSM when they need a "Catholic" point of view. Donohue does spout the most extreme views from the Roman curia, but his views are not shared by the majority of the Catholic faithful, many of which are progressive and fellow DUers.

10. I used to be Catholic ;parochial schooled
This guy is a crackpot, and is entitled to his opinion. Yes, I have noticed that he is ubiquitous to any media discussion of the RC's. No Jesuits are ever asked.

12. Exactly right, IG
Bill Donohue is called on by the major media for reasons that defy understanding. He and his little League don't represent mainstream Catholic thought, they don't have any official standing in the Catholic Church, and yet when the media need a statement exemplifying the worst impulses of Catholicism, they go straight (pardon the expression) to Donohue and his good old-fashioned bigotry.

9. May I as a former catholic make this
statement. Shut the f k up. You have done more damage to the world and its citizens that all the recent wars. I find the church to be obsolete and beyond redemption.

11. Wow, I didn't realize these two young ladies
were so close to toppling the Catholic Church. I mean, I can't imagine why else their new jobs would spark such a virulent reaction from Bill Donohoe. The entire hierarchy of the Church must be hanging by a thread.
