Gov. Richardson's foreign policy
I doubt Richardson will ever be a DU favorite, but I do like a lot about him...

http://mcjoan.dailykos.com/

Tomorrow Governor Bill Richardson will deliver a major address at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, DC. In the speech, entitled "The New Realism and the Rebirth of American Leadership," Richardson will outline his vision for American foreign policy. In advance of his speech, he spent a few minutes on a blogger conference call today.

In the call, Richardson briefly outlined the seven key points he has established as his foreign policy proposals:
1. Repairing international alliances by working with traditional allies and reengaging them in our foreign policy;
2. Renew the U.S. commitment to international law and treaties, including abiding by the Geneva Convention, shutting down Guantanamo, rejecting torture as a policy device;
3. A "wholesale assault" to reduce global warming, including going beyond the Kyoto protocols in establishing national benchmarks for enivronmental protection;
4. Engage our enemies by having direct talks with North Korea, Iran, and Syria;
5. Refocus on the "real international threats" including nuclear proliferation and the threat of nuclear terrorism;
6. Engage Latin America on a range of issues from immigration reform to economic, energy, and environmental cooperation;
7. Fight international poverty

(There is more at the link about his support for defunding and deauthorizing the war, etc).

1. I'll be honest... I love this guy for President.... I really think...
he has what it takes to get this country back where it should be. Unfortuneatly, I don't think that it happen... and I am very sad about that.... I will hope and pray though... Richardson to me is the real deal.... In all honesty if Russ Fiengold were running, I would have to go with him over Richardson, but I sure think they would make a damn great team..... JMHO again.

2. Carter, Clinton and Kerry were not exactly leading the pack
at this time before their respective nominations. Richardson is only polling single digits but he came in 4th place behind Edwards, Obama and Clark on the most recent dailykos poll (and ahead of HRC, Biden, Dodd, Kucinich, etc) for whatever that's worth. Probably not a lot, but I think he will continue to improve.

3. Richardson probably most
qualified for foreign affairs and god knows the US needs some getting along with 'foreigners', i.e. the rest of the world.

4. And that's one of the things that interests me the most about him
He LOVES diplomacy. I know plenty of morons get Nobel Peace Prize nominations, but Richardson has gotten 4 of them for his foreign negotiations. What a 180 from Bush.

6. He is clearly one of the most qualified people in the whole country
I already hitched my wagon to someone else but Richardson is jaw droppingly impressive.

7. Very good stuff
I don't have a candidate yet but I am open to what Bill Richardson has to say. He's got an impressive grasp on the issues and some good ideas.

Thanks for posting this, I look forward to reading more on Gov. Richardson as we go on through primaries. Especially the debates so I can get a better "feel" for how he expresses himself.

10. Richardson keeps looking better and better
It's going to be hard for him to compete with the big three, at least in terms of raising money, but - you never know.

I know I've read some negative things about him here at DU, but I've always been impressed when I've seen him interviewed on TV.

12. In terms of being electable ....
DU and other Democrats should seriously consider supporting Richardson BECAUSE HE'S A GOVERNOR. You have to go all the way back to JFK to find an elected president who wasn't a governor or a VP. That's over 40 years ago folks. Supporting another senator will just lose us another election, no matter how strong a candidate they may seem to be.

13. Heck, there are only 3 people to go from the senate to the Whitehouse since LINCOLN
Harrison, Harding, Kennedy.

Richardson would easily win NM, add that to kerry's 252 evs, and he only has 13 to go. If he won OH or FL or VA, he's be president.

Alas, there is a lot more to like about RIchardson than his "electability." Most DUers don't like talking about "electability" anyway.
