(no proof but) McCain's Nixon 1972 Style Presidential Campaign Strategy
This is just a hunch, guys. We all know that John McCain has hired all the worst people working in election politics, the Swiftboat people, the "Call me, Harold" people, the people who smeared McCain. Maybe he told himself that if he hired all the vile, evil people, they would not be hired by his opponents to go after him. Or maybe his brush with death in the form of melanoma made him decide that this time he will win regardless of the cost to his soul . We have seen him toss ethics, honor, pride to the win. Who can doubt that he will stoop to any form of dirty campaign politics?

That is why I think that we are witnessing a right wing directed, corporate media facilitated Nixon 1972 style campaign. The goal is simple. Get Hillary/Obama as the final Democratic ticket so that Team McCain can launch an evil campaign consisting of three elements. Hillary is a bitch. Obama is a Black Muslim. Hillary and Obama are probably gonna have an affair if they are not already having one.

I am not asking anyone to debate the merits of such a strategy. The GOP public relations guys are way out of touch with how mainstream America thinks. What matters is how the right wing thinks, and they think that lies like the ones above would sink the Democratic nominees.

In order to achieve their goal, they will mercilessly knock down as many "Muskies" as necessary, starting first with the prominent Democrat with the heavy southern accent, because a southern accent has been proven to drain independent and Republican votes. That is all the reason that Team McCain needs to target Edwards. His policies are irrelevant, as far as they are concerned. They fear an articulate, good looking southern candidate with a full head of hair--demographically some one who would beat McCain.

It could be a coincidence that John Solomon wrote his real estate piece and the WaPo put it on the front page and that the Free Republic and right wing newspaper leapt upon Edwards new house and that right wing bloggers peddled a story about Edwards new bloggers making anti-Catholic remarks and every TV news network ran the story, even NBC all within the space of a month. At the same time that the TV pundits are talking about Hillary being an unstoppable Juggernaut and Obama being a rising star and ignoring everyone else.

It could be. But I do not think so. I think we are witnessing dirty tricks of the Nixon, 1972 variety from Team McCain, designed to influence the Democratic nomination. Because face it. He can not get elected on his own merits. And with the Democrats in control of Congress, it is likely that election reform will remove election fraud as an option for him. So, he is going to have to rely on corporate money and dirty politics.

1. And you know why he's made these choices?
Because he learned in 2000 that personality and integrity don't win elections.

He saw how * destroyed him in South Carolina during the primaries and he took notes.

Whatever it takes . . .

2. Prediction McCain 2008: I have a 'secret plan' to end the war in Iraq
As to his dirty tricksters, he's hiring up all the big bad bushies:

John McCain's Hired Guns

<snip>

Terry Nelson
At the top of the team is Bush's 2004 national political director, Terry Nelson. Nelson originally came on to McCain's team in March of this year as a senior advisor to McCain's PAC, Straight Talk America. Nelson was political director of the NRCC in 2000 and is credited with helping to build the RNC's grass-roots mobilization effort in 2000 and 2004. Nelson, an Iowa native who at one point worked for Jim Nussle, signals that McCain is making a strong play for Iowa, which he passed up in favor of New Hampshire during his failed 2000 campaign.

But besides Nelson's organizational skills, his easy-going manner is a cover for a down-and-dirty political infighter. Nelson was responsible for approving the highly criticized Republican ad against Harold Ford, Jr. that had a white woman asking the candidate to call her after meeting him at the Playboy mansion. The controversial ad was pulled after a week and a half, but not before it produced a turnaround in Ford's numbers from which he never fully recovered. He's been associated with the Tom DeLay scandal, and tangentially associated with the New Hampshire phone-jamming scheme to obstruct the Democrats' get-out-the-vote effort in 2002 and the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. And in a twist of the knife to Democratic dark-horse-wanna-be John Edwards, Nelson also represented Wal-mart in its push to repair its image. While Democrats may try to make hay out of Nelson's past, McCain's campaign, which was hit hard in 2000 by Nelson's kind of tactics, is smart to bring someone in who can fight the dirty fight if necessary.
