Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg addresses law students

Associated Press

MIAMI - U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg stressed the importance of a diverse student body during a visit to Florida International University on Saturday.

Noting the school has the highest number of Hispanic students of any local school in the country, Ginsburg lauded FIU's global approach and commitment to diversity.

Her speech capped off a three-day celebration over the law school's new state-of-the-art building, a three-story $40 million facility designed by famed architect and dean of the school of architecture at Yale University, Robert A.M. Stern, The Miami Herald reported for Sunday's edition.

"The benefits of a diverse student population are not theoretical but real," said Ginsburg, who cited a 2003 Supreme Court decision to uphold the affirmative action policy at the University of Michigan's law school
