A thought on the next President....
...reading through this excellent post:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=post&forum=132&topic_id=3105116&mesg_id=3105116

I found myself thinking about what our nation yearns for in a leader and governor (the two are inseperable). We desire the qualities and character of a Smedly Butler, a Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt, an Abe Lincoln, and, to bring us closer our nuclear age, a Harry Truman.

I believe we have a combination of those in our midst. It's this man:

A man of eloquence and conviction with a worldview and nationview that we have sorely lacked these past dismal six years.

"Jim Webb for President" plain and simple.

1. It's unrealistic. The man is not seeking this. I think Webb is a powerhouse
but, he does not seek the office. he is new and we don't know about him. We don't know how he will vote on the issues.
I think he is amazing but, given that he just sat down in his seat a month ago and is not seeking the office, I find it a unrealistic thought. sorry.

3. I respectfully disagree....
...it was unrealistic to think that the current buffoon in the White House had the experience necessary to occupy that position yet here he is.

4. Webb's not been in the Senate for....
....two months and you're already calling for him to run for President?

We need him for our majority in the Senate!! We've got plenty of great Presidential candidates already.

6. We will have a bulletproof Senate in 2009.
The Republicans are running fast and furious away from their records but it will do no good. Here are examples one and two for your reading pleasure.

8. Nothing is for sure.
Nothing is locked for 2009, we have a lot of races we need to win in 2008. Jim Webb should stay in the Senate, and show America they have a Democratic majority that works for them and work to get more people re-elected and elected in 2008.

His services to run for President aren't needed, he hasn't even been in the Senate half a year (hell not TWO months) and you're calling for him to run for President? Not going to happen!!

2. It's too soon.
He's very important to our majority in the Senate. He's one of the most credible and leading voices on the war in Iraq we have in the Congress. It'd be too soon to run for President, and unless we lose in 2008 (MY GOD WE BETTER NOT!!) I'm not sure we'll ever see Jim Webb running for President because of his age.

He should stay in the Senate, and be a powerhouse there!! I really like him though.

5. A good man, a sturdy soul, has the right stuff.
But the 2008 field is pretty crowded, with a possibility of a couple more entries. Webb just took George Allen out of the U.S. Senate (and out of the 2008 GOP nomination race, too), and we need him on the SFRC, especially in light of the Bush administration's recalcitrance on Iraq.

He'd likely do a terrific job anywhere. It seems built-in to him. Down the road, I more than half expect him to be a player and contender for the top job.

7. I agree...

...he defeated a "lock" in one of the reddest of red states. His stature and war record (not to mention his subsequent chronicling of the war he fought in) is beyond reproach. His ability to manage big government (the U.S. Navy) is well documented. Finally, he appeals to the middle class by virtue of his roots.

Stack these up against candidates from both parties and you'll see a giant, albeit sleeping, among tbe Lilliputs.

"Jim Webb for President" plain and simple.

9. Give it time.
He'll have his time in the sun in the future, whether it's running for President or leading the charge on important issues in the Senate. He needs to stay in the Senate where he is needed. We've got a lot of great candidates for President, and lets rally behind getting one of them elected in 2008!!
