Giuliani says gun control helped reduce N.Y. crime
http://www3.whdh.com/news/articles/national/BO42897

Rudy Giuliani addressed a potentially troublesome issue with conservative voters, saying his policies as mayor to get handguns off the street helped reduce crime in New York.

"I used gun control as mayor," he said at a news conference Saturday during a swing through California. But "I understand the Second Amendment. I understand the right to bear arms."

He said what he did as mayor would have no effect on hunting.

Addressing another potential trouble spot with conservatives, Giuliani spoke in favor of a border fence, saying, "You have to have secure borders, you have to have a fence, and the fence I think has to be a highly technological one."

1. Gun control will not make him too popular with the NRA
How can a republican make it with out the meme of pro gun? These are one issue people we are talking about here.

6. Yep - a Pennsylvania gun forum I visited tonight were none too
happy. They don't trust Rudy on this issue. And he's also stepped in to saying he will protect hunting. I can tell you most of them are not concerned about hunting, it's their right to personal defense firearms that concerns them and their ability to own whatever firearm they want short of a full auto.

8. Fewer guns on the streets makes for a safer city
Look at the statistics on how many people get shot in London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Madrid.

Fortunately "gun forum" regulars don't speak for the majority of life-loving Americans.

2. There goes Alabama!
Rudy is a non-starter in the Republican Primaries with that kind of talk.

3. Um...
Someone should tell Rudy that he's a Republican. Seriously-how does he think he'll get the endorsement?

4. This is consistent with his position on the First and Fourth amendments...
i.e., they only apply to Important People, not the Little People. Don't forget that Guliani is the guy who helped bring you "free speech zones" and Justin Volpe, and who supports the Patriot Act to the hilt. He is IMHO a rather scary dude.

He said what he did as mayor would have no effect on hunting.

Hey Rudy, hunting is IRRELEVANT...most gun owners aren't hunters, dude...
