'100%' in president race, Giuliani tells tech group
Ex-N.Y. mayor lauds Schwarzenegger in Silicon Valley talk

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, insisting he is "100 percent committed" to running for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, wooed Silicon Valley's tech leaders Monday -- saying he "definitely'' believes in global warming, praising Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for being a "progressive'' leader on the environment and calling for immigration policies that welcome "people who make contributions" to America's economy.

Giuliani spoke to about 500 members of the Churchill Club, a Silicon Valley business leaders organization, at the Hyatt in Santa Clara Monday, meeting privately beforehand with a handful of top tech executives and then with about 100 potential supporters at a VIP reception before an hourlong talk to the crowd, where he was warmly received as a leading presidential hopeful.

(snip)

"I do believe there's global warming, yes,'' said Giuliani, in response to reporters' questions following his talk to the Churchill Club. "The big question has always been how much of it is happening because of natural climate changes and how much of it is happening because of human intervention.''

But "the overwhelming number of scientists now believe that there is significant human cause,'' he said, adding the debate on the existence of global warming "is almost unnecessary ... because we should be dealing with pollution anyway.''

He also delivered a sharp jab at former Vice President Al Gore, saying his Academy Award-nominated documentary about global warming, "An Inconvenient Truth,'' serves to "frighten people ... but it doesn't really recommend solutions,'' such as nuclear power.

Giuliani, who met with Schwarzenegger for more than an hour in the past weekend -- and discussed the issue of climate change with him -- said Monday he was unfamiliar with all the details of the governor's landmark bill to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2010. But, "I generally agree with Gov. Schwarzenegger,'' he said. "He's a good friend and a progressive leader.''

2. unfortunately, he has a point
An Inconvenient Truth does the job of informing people that climate change exists, that it is mostly caused by human activity, and that it is a problem we need to address, urgently.

I wish there had been more information about where all the carbon dioxide is coming from. Gore mentions the growth of human population, but where were the stats on the number of cars, trucks and airplanes? The number of miles driven and flights taken? Climbing from basically zero just 100 years ago to what we have now.

Also it is worth informing people that increasing demand for meat has led to the breeding of more livestock including cows and pigs that give off thousands of tons of methane gas.

The movie also does not provide much information about practical solutions and how we can take steps to reduce carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions. There is some text right at the end of the movie, but I wish there had been more time devoted to solutions.

What we really need is a second book and movie. Maybe it could be called An Unavoidable Choice (the choice of either taking action or facing the consequences of inaction).

If Al Gore decides not to run for President, I hope he puts together a sequel on the climate crisis - focusing on identifying and reducing the principal causes of greenhouse gas emissions.

3. Now he has to think for people too?

People finally see the big picture because of Al Gore and his
book/movie. It's time everybody pitches in to fix the problems.
Go on the internet, go to the library, write to your reps......
Why does Al Gore have to hold everybody's hand at this point?
This isn't a Brave New World or the Stepford Wives....it's our
planet.

I guess Al Gore just HAS to become president, so he can be in the
leadership position of making big changes. I haven't seen any of
the candidates come up with solutions to the problems. I have
heard Al Gore come up with plenty of things people can do right
in their own homes that will help. Treading lightly on the planet
doesn't require rocket science education.

By the way, what has Guilliani suggested we do? I rest my point.
