Vermont Becomes First State to Call for US Troop Withdrawal from Iraq
Vermont Becomes First State to Call for US Troop Withdrawal from Iraq

The Vermont State Legislature made headlines yesterday when lawmakers passed resolutions in both the House and Senate calling for the immediate and orderly withdrawal of US troops from Iraq. Vermont has lost more soldiers per capita than any other state in the nation, and is the first state to pass a resolution calling for troop withdrawal. The majority of Democrats supported the resolution. Most Republicans opposed it, contesting a passage that suggested the presence of US troops would not bring stability to Iraq, or security to the United States.
Representative Michael Fisher, a Democrat, was the original author of the House resolution. He joins us by phone from Montpelier, Vermont. Welcome to Democracy Now!

1. This from a state that elected a democratic socialist for a senator.
They're way ahead of the curve up there.

2. You got that right!
I'd move to Vermont but it's too damned cold for this Texan (I currently reside in NC).

5. Come on up, cool user name.
The cold doesn`t begin to compare with the warmth of Vermont`s citizens. I can`t begin to tell you what a special place this is.

NOTE: Don`t come today. The whole state is under blizzard conditions. Foot of snow so far and it just got started! It`s so beautiful out there.

7. You ain't kidding!
I'm in the Kingdom and I'm literally snowed in. I barely made it to the barn this morning to feed the chickens. We've already had over a foot and it's supposed to snow into tomorrow. We could end up with close to 3 feet.

10. Two feet and counting here, cali.
I`m ten minutes from the nearest Northeast Kingdom town. Let it snow, let it snow. Soup on the woodstove, birdfeeders filled, fresh pie in the fridge, warm socks. It`s all good.

~PEACE~

11. The Northeast Kingdom is absolutely beautiful---
I was there a few years ago and fell in love. I have always loved it there but that was my first time in the NEK---I tease my hubby constantly about moving there but my granddaughter is here in PA and would be heart broken if we left.
Here in Warren County PA we got a dumping of at least 2 foot of snow since last nite......let it snow!!!! :-)

13. The Kingdom is almost uncannily beautiful
Even after living here for over 25 years, it knocks me out. But we now have so much snow, I don't think I'll be able to get out of the house tomorrow. I live in a little hollow and we've already had over 2 feet. It's drifted so high that my kitchen windows are completely covered, and it's halfway up the door to my patio.

14. I can understand the snow
We are in the snow belt region of PA and know "feet" of snow. We are lucky that we didnt recieve the amount that upstate NY did.....this time I dont mind sharing :)
You live in a very beautiful state and its comfy to say the least. When my family come to the United States way back when they originally settled in lower Vermont....a village called Shaftsbury where they had a tavern, which is now a museum. Every time I have visited the state I have gotten the feeling of "going home" :-)

15. My Mom's from the Northeast Kingdom
She was born & raised just outside of Newport, VT. The family is all in Massachusetts now. (also a pretty cool state) But if I wasn't tied down here with family obligations, I'd move up to VT in a heartbeat.

4. I love Vermont.
Last I heard, Vermont has lost more soldiers per capita than any other state and we have a very high mobilization rate for National Guard and Reservists. Second in the country, I think. Several Vermont towns will have a BRING THE TROOPS HOME initiative on their Town Meeting ballots in March.

16. I look forward to the day...
...that the entire northeast says farewell to the U.S. Might not be a popular position, but I feel the US is to large to be governed by one government. The regions have far different agendas and priorities and with the destruction of the individual states we are governed by the desires of people who live a thousand miles away with very different values. I truly believe that somewhere in the future you will see America split into 4 or 5 different countries. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Vermont and the other New England states lead the way.
