DSCC takes aim at Smith, Sununu

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- In one of the first volleys fired in the battle for control of the Senate in 2008, Senate Democrats are taking aim at two incumbent GOP senators who voted to delay a debate on a resolution condemning the troop increase in Iraq.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has placed ads in the home-state newspapers of Sens. Gordon Smith of Oregon and John Sununu of New Hampshire.

Both senators -- considered among the most vulnerable Republicans running for reelection in 2008 according to "Congressional Quarterly" -- have come out against the troop increase. But the two senators voted with their party last week to delay a vote on bipartisan measure condemning the plan until the Republicans are able to offer a counter measure

"We are going to hold the Republicans' feet to the fire when they put their blind allegiance to George Bush ahead of our national security," DSCC spokesman Matthew Miller said in a release by the committee. "John Sununu and Gordon Smith continue to support Bush's failed Iraq policy and these ads will make sure voters in their states know it."
