1. I'll only be impressed...
If his character wears black leather buttless chaps and nipple clamps. ;-)

7. It's pretty amazing place.
The whole build yourself a virtual world is fascinating. I see a lot of real world advertising starting to take root there. I find the controls difficult to master (I probably don't have enough processing HP to control my avatar properly), but it is a really different experience.

22. Plenty of online virtual reality people will love it.
It really reminds me of Sim City. Edwards is really leading on this and it will reach a whole new crowd.

I thought I read an article a while ago, last year some time. But I don't know anything about these virtual life things, so I could be wrong.

17. From your link
Some media attention has been given to sexually related activity involving avatars with a child-like appearance <5>, although residents on Second Life's Main Grid must be 18 years or older <4>, for the most part making the issue one of role-playing between consenting adults

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Life_issues_and_criticisms#Pornography

This was it, I guess, child avatars in adult sex sections. Not quite child porn, but sleazy anyway.

18. I'm not sure about that...
since I've not heard of any specific child porn issues in Second Life. But I do know that the adult industry is driving much of SL's popularity, at least based on my looking around there. Like most new and upcoming technology, the porn industry is certainly giving it a boost. In other words, here's plenty of virtual sex going on and you can buy all kinds of crazy fantasy outfits and relatively elicit "gestures" that your avatar can perform with others, if you're into that sort of thing, but nothing to be alarmed about, I don't think. They have a pretty strict policy it seems about the age requirements of members.

There is a version of the software called Teen Second Life that is geared towards kids, so there may have been some issues in the past. I don't know I've only been a resident for a couple of months...

20. It's good to hear they're strict about it
I don't care what adults do as long as kids are kept out of it. Thanks for the explanation.

But I certainly know what you mean. I steer away from the more lewd side of Second Life myself but it is a reality that there are plenty of adults that get into the typical anime-style aesthetic that sometimes includes dressing up as children or some such. I've heard that this happens in Second Life, but have not seen it myself. I have seen a few of the "Furries" around. They're the ones that like to dress up as animals... kinda like humans but with the head of a fox with a huge tail and everything... A bit odd for my tastes... but, hey, what ever floats your boat, I guess. But like you said, as long as it doesn't involve kids, I could care less what adults do...

on edit... spelling

Second Life is a pretty cool world and I love it when the politicians try to "get with it" with the young crowd...

I think Mark Warner was the first one to venture into the crazy world of Second Life. I'm a resident (although I am certainly not amongst the younger set) and love it, but then again, I'm just a tech geek that always hoped a virtual reality world, such as Neil Stephenson's vision in Snowcrash, would eventually catch on. I've met a number of interesting people from all over the world in Second Life. I particularly enjoy the live music performances.

I'll have to check out what Edwards is doing there...

on edit... jsut wanted to add a link to an Arianna Huffington interview that took place in Second Life: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/arianna-huffington/virtual-davos_b_39544.html during the Davos thing...

A lot of folks misspell John Edwards' name when they use a possessive. I've not seen the psychic John Edward but I sure hear lots about him.

25. lol you learn something new every day -
(I am relieved to discover upon clicking into this thread that the fact that "Edwards is a resident of Second Life" DIDN'T mean that he has suddenly checked into a rehab to address some hitherto unkown-of alcoholism or addiction problem.)

So John Edwards is a member of a virtual reality world called "Second Life." I wonder what his, ahem, virtual house looks like? the Wikipedia entry linked in a post above tells us -

"Premium members can own land (up to 512 m² without additional fees). Owning larger areas of land incurs an additional fee (which Linden Lab calls "tier") ranging from US$5 a month up to US$295 a month for an individual island.<23><24> Linden Lab sells land to new residents in small 512 m² lots (e.g., 16 by 32 meters) through its First Land program. It also sells 16 acre (65536m2) regions."

I wonder if 16 acres was enough for his cyber-home, or if he felt he needed an "island"?

Sorry! :hide:

Jose Rote, a JRE supporter, volunteered to set this up. Edwards Internet team is happy about it, and is encouraging him, but they have not given one dime towards a subscription.

And to the poster, to use a cliche, no man is an island.
