Sestak’s Bill For Dated Troop Withdrawal Ignites Furor

By WILLIAM BENDER

U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak’s proposal to withdraw virtually all American troops from Iraq by year’s end and halt the funding of Operation Iraqi Freedom sparked a passionate debate Thursday among policymakers in Washington and war veterans in Delaware County.

The House Republican leadership immediately rejected Sestak’s binding legislation, which goes beyond what even many anti-war Democrats are considering.

But the congressman and his allies are hoping his credentials as a former Navy vice admiral with counter-terrorism experience will build support for the bill in the coming weeks and months. It was submitted Thursday to the House clerk.

“I believe there are many Democrats and some Republicans that believe this is the right thing,” said Sestak, D-7th, of Newtown. “The tough decision for some is do they stand and say it?”

Describing him as “incredibly courageous,” U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, D-N.H., signed onto Sestak’s bill as an original co-sponsor. “I’m supporting it because he’s right. He’s absolutely right. This is a mission that has not worked out.”

This is what the House should debate! End the war!

2. We need more good ones like Cong. Sestak
He is doing his job and looking after the troops by making sure they have an achievable mission. Good man.

3. Way to go, Joe!
If I lived just a few miles away, I'd be in his district.

4. Joe Sestak is another one that I wish I had a bumper sticker
from. Right smack next to my Jim Webb, Born Fighting one. :)

5. This is the kind of anti-war legislation we need...
The funding cut stuff is too easy to attack as "putting the troops in danger."
