6. Keep in mind
Today's voters didn't live to see more than 75% of our presidents, so... this poll can't be taken very seriously.

GWB is definitely in the bottom 5 of all time, though.

19. Of course you're right, but it's still hilarious that The Decider at 82%
Edited on Sun Feb-18-07 12:51 AM by Phredicles
has as many votes as the next three losers combined.

7. The only thing this really shows...
is that most people are absolutely ignorant of any 'history' beyond the span of their own lifetimes, and then only what they've seen on TV. You're lucky even here on DU if you can get anybody to realize that anything important ever happened before about, say, 1969 (an exception is granted for all the 'experts' on 1930s Germany, but then again that doesn't really count, since everyone is an 'expert' on that).

13. I doubt you can defend this
Granted (no pun intended) it's not uncommon to find people piling on Grant in this type of poll, but their 'reasoning' usually derives from comic book history -- i.e. they read a blurb once that Grant's administration was hopelessly corrupt, so they've picked up that ball and are running with it (before heading over to Wikipedia to become an expert on National Socialism).

Personally I fail to see how you can maintain that he's worse than (in chronological order)

George W Bush
Ronald Reagan
Richard Nixon
Herbert Hoover
James Buchanan

Or, for that matter, Thomas Jefferson, whose presidential performance (Louisiana Purchase and Lewis and Clark aside, if you favor Manifest Destiny) was not exactly in the top tier.

10. I voted for Fillmore for his unfortunate inspiration of a hideous cartoon.

Guilt by association. I can't help it if I'm shallow.

20. Do you know who Millard Filmore's biggest fan was?
Abraham Lincoln, that's who. Before taking office Lincoln went out of his way to consult with Filmore about the impending secession crisis. Filmore, tho unelected to the office, was the only president before Lincoln to stand foursquare against the expansion of slavery into the west. He doesn't get the credit he's due.

21. That's interesting, and I did not know that.
I guess my vote in the poll was misdirected; nevertheless, Bruce Tinsley does not serve Fillmore's memory well.

12. I am suprised,
that in a RW US news and World report poll, that Clinton and Johnson polled so low. Also I'm suprised that Carter got 15% worst.

16. I'm guessing they're bitter he was so mean to the poor Confederacy;
I'm surprised by the 1% who voted for Wm. Henry Harrison: He didn't have time to mess anything up!

17. Sure. Don't you know he suspended Habeas Corpus???
Granted, he only applied it in certain situations, and even then it was in the midst of a pretty serious domestic crisis and all that, but for some people your political litmus paper has to be 100% pure or you're in league with hell. "It is better to let the house burn to the ground and the baby fry in the crib than to violate the sacrosanct rigor of the strict interpretation of the law".

Also, he freed some of the coloreds. That alone is enough to damn him to absolute A-1 worst president for some people. Watergate does not bother me. Does your conscience bother you?
